I have a cable I assembled 40 years ago from sheilded wire and a couple of phone jacks that "sounds" just as good as my new cables from GC.
I can't hear any difference in tone or throughput of signal.
I've always thought the expensive and gold plated cables/plugs were kind of "scammy".
I walk all over my LiveWire cables with no problems so far.
The heavy rubber sleeve seems to work fine.

I buy cables in the $25-$30 range. Look for good quality connectors with some sort of strain relief. Generally that's a sign that the cable shielding is going to be good as well. You don't have to go over the top.
People would be amazed to know what great songs were recorded with the cheap cables that companies like Fender and Hofner included with their instruments.

You know that cable "quality" is 90% bulls**t? You really need "better quality", or a lower gauge cable for when you really take everything out of the amp.
The higher the watts get, the "better", lower gauge cable you need, as long as you never had clipping because of your cable, there's no need to upgrade.
Anyway way there's almost no difference with these cables, a good quality Monster cable for 30-50$ will give you the same as the high-end 150$ cable. Since you'll never transfer this amount of "data", or lets call it watts.
Every average 30-50$ cable can push more than 1000watts, because instrument cables are heavy gauge, a 5$ cable can push around 500watts, and give you the same quality of sound in this power range as the 150$ cable.
Since these cable are analog, and not digital, it does matter what kind of cable you're using, but not that much.
Speaker cable gauge determines how many watts you can push, that's it, all this "carbon", "gold", "etc" elements are not important since it's not that the entire cable is made from gold, that would cost A LOT of money, just the connector.
I'm pretty sure you're not going to play in the Hammersmith Apollo, with 2,000-4,000 watts of amplification, or for about 50,000 people, you'll be fine with a 30$ cable, just pick if you want an angled connector, or not.

It doesn't take much to make a superb instrument cable, so Bill Fitzmaurice's example of a $29.95 20-footer is pretty good. Anything significantly more than that is just a lot of puffery and ego-stroking.
I use the 21 foot Monster bass cable. Been usuing it for about a year and a half (the same one) and I can't tell you how many times i've stepped over it already. Still works as well as the day I got it. Very reliable and can endure pretty much whatever you throw at it. Spent $40 on it.
Mogami gold cables are my main cables. My pedal board has planet waves patch cables because they were cheap they came in a 3 pack for 9.50 shipped on amazon. From now on im buying cables from amazon.
Mogami golds all the way. I have only broken one in my life, and I took it to guitar center for a new one, no questions asked.
Bought them on amazon I should mention. I go with anything guitar center stocks, as they just replace anything for you. It's fantastic when you're in a pinch on tour, as you can always find a gc on your daily drive.

Many great cables mentioned here but I have to plug Rapco. Great company, made in USA, lifetime warranty, every length thickness and configuration you can think of, and they're cheap!!!
I only have planet waves cables. I bought my first one 10 years ago and it's still going strong! Since then I've just gone with planet waves for more cables as I know they're reliable. The stuff just works and works and works and works...
Rolling your own is most economical, but I wish I knew a place to get the cool cloth braiding to go on the outside of the cable.
