Favorite Combos

hey, guys and girls, quick question for ya. i've been playing semipro for about 7 years and have used eden, swr, ampeg, gk, and fender amps. i currently use (and love) an american svt-cl with a 410hlf. i am returning to college and am no longer playing the amount i used to. i was looking to down size to a combo to play at home and at occasional small gigs. just wondering what suggestions anyone had for a starting point. tube or solid state, under $1000. i would kill for a 60's b-15n, but that may have to wait a while. thanks

B100R's are great amps and can be found for $335-350 used. They don't nail the B-15 sound but they're about as close as you can get out of gear that's still being made. But they're only 100w so it might not quite be enough for larger gigs with no PA. Haven't tried the B200R.

But if you like the Ampeg sound and want to blow the whole grand on a great combo that can do everything you need from it, I'd look into the Markbass Mini CMD121P or the Jeff Berlin. The Berlin sounds deeper but the Mini CMD is only slightly less deep sounding and weighs considerably less.

Mesa Walkabout 12 combos can be found used for under $1k for sure. I believe there are a few in the classifieds right now.

300w into a passive radiator design 12 + tweet cab, great punchy full range combo that can't be beat. Often referred to as modern B-15 around here.

worth checking out.

good luck back at school

thanks for the replys! the b200 and the walkabout scout 15 are definatly peaking my interest. i have yet to play vietnam ampeg, but i would hardly let the lable alone sway me from trying it out. if the b200 came in a flip top design, it would be very hard to resist the sex appeal. i guess i will have to rely on sound alone to make my decision ;). mesa may very well be the new ampeg. i have played the scout 12 and it was unbelievable! hopefully i can find the 15 to try out. speaking of sex appeal:

Same price as the Walkabout Scout Combo with a fifteen inch speaker, well dressed out in basic black with silver piping and black grillcloth, anyway ;)

RickenBoogie,

Not sure at all as Mesa has still not placed a published weight spec on the Carbine Combo. However, I did check the shipping carton when the cab only box arrived and it listed the shipped weight as 84 lbs.

SO that info combined with a guess at 22 lbs. for the Carbine head (the naked rackmount M-Pulse is listed at 28 lbs. in the Mesa Pro Net Sheets) makes it probably right around 105 lbs give or take. My gear schlep experience with the combo confirms that that is most likely very close. I would be surprised if it specs out any higher than 110 lbs. though.

Cheers,

Mr. BEAR

anyone know what i could expect to pay for a scout or carbine? im not able to find any prices online.

the last ProNet price list I had showed $1199 for the Walkabout 12, but did not have a price for the Carbine M6. I think the price for the Carbine is close to the Walkabout. I think you may find Carbine's harder to find than the Walkabout.

You can also find the Walkabout used for much less (of course). I have seen them here in the TB classifieds listed between $700-900. Great deal there.

good luck.
