Okay, it looks like this is the thread for some of my questions on DI's. I have two potential uses (three, really, but more on that below) for a DI, and from all that I have read, it sounds like I might need two different boxes to cover all these bases.
First, I'd like a quality DI box to use with my Walter Woods. Walter heavily recommends that you use a seperate DI box, and his DI is only 1/4". With a head like a WWU, you are not going to want to degrade your signal in any way, so a quality box, with a very uncolored tone is going to be ideal. It seems like a Radial, Avalon, or maybe Raven Labs DI would be great in this regard.
Next, in some circumstances, I might like to have a DI placed at the front of my rig, and in this case I would be looking for a unit that actually adds something to my tone. One of the tube units (Aguilar, Demeter, Ampeg) might be more appropriate, here. A unit that could act as a standalone preamp (like the U5) might have some added usefulness in this regard.
The third potential use for such a box would be as a buffering preamp for a piezo-equipped instrument, but I am really quite happy with my Stewart UDP-1a in that regard, so I am not really looking for a unit to fit this need.
On the one hand, it seems like the U5 fits darn near all of my wants/desires. But, on the other, it might be nice to also have something that adds some "tonal flavor", like one of the tube boxes (though I certainly don't want to go all "Max V" on the DI thing - I've got my cab/amp addiction, after all!).
Talk to me folks! I appreciate any feedback aimed my way.
Tom.
