Favorite Guitarists?

Forgot Rik Emmett.
Oh, and Michael Hedges!

The guitar player I started out with back in 1985 was a huge Hedges fan, which is how I came to know of him. He went on to build and sell his own design of harp guitar:
This is us in 1985:

and this is him playing and talking about his designs 30 years on:

In no particular order:
- Tony Iommi
- "Fast Eddie" Clarke (RIP)
- Scott Ian
- Kirk Hammett
- James Hetfield (AKA Papa Het)
- Bobby Gustafson (when he was in Overkill in the 1980s)
- Dave Chandler
- Matt Pike (particularly his work with Sleep)
- Ritchie Blackmore
- Keith Richards
- Robbie Krieger
- Jimi Hendrix (RIP)
- SRV (RIP)
- Chet Atkins (RIP)

I suppose it's worth a shout-out to a handful of the more 'chart-oriented' '80s guitar players that made a bit of splash with me back then

It's funny, I rarely think of these guys when the conversation turns to "Favorite Guitarists" but every time I hear a tune from the 80s that features the guitar playing of
- Nile Rogers (Chic)
- Al McKay (Earth Wind & Fire)
- Jamie West-Oram (The Fixx)
I get a big smile on my face.

As a fellow bassist totally get that list! For once I like to meet a guitarist who would name Al McKay or Jimmy Nolan as a influence.😁

Well that would include influences, as I also played guitar, as well as guitarists I just enjoy listening to.

Off the top of my head:
Glenn Kaiser
Phil Keaggy
Neil Young
Albert King
B.B. King
Buddy Guy
Jeff Beck
Christopher Parkening
Blind Willie Johnson
Hound Dog Taylor

after considering and reconsidering, I will list the following, in no particular order:
Yamandu Costa
Shawn Lane
Cenk Urdogan
Jeff Beck
Carlos Moscardini
Matteo Mancuso
Wes Montgomery
Eric Johnson
I'm a little late here, but I saw the mention of Shawn Lane (R.I.P.)

I played a very interesting and spontaneous jazz gig with Shawn and another guitarist in the early 2000's. He was warming up playing this insane shred stuff so I tried to impress him by playing Teen Town. He immediately joined in but increased the tempo so much that it was impossible to keep up.

Later, we played Wave (Jobim) and he started soloing really outside and at this astronomical speed. I have never heard any guitarist on any recording play that fast and of course being the genius that he was, it was also very musical. My face melted off. We exchanged numbers but nothing ever materialized.

That guy was from another galaxy.

Monster keyboard player as well, definitely a savant.

Mostly all the British prog guys from the ‘70s. (You know who!)
Even amongst them, Steve Hackett is a favorite.
Peter Banks, Steve Howe, Robert Fripp, Andy Latimer, Phil Manzanera. Trevor Rabin a bit later….
I thought Trevor Rabin was from South Africa? Incredible player and composer who was more than up for the daunting task of trying to fill Steve Howe's shoes.
