Favorite Power Trios?

When I think of Trio acts, I equate that to 3 musicians that are at the top of the heap in their respective area. For me, that narrows the lot to just "Cream".

Cream "Live Vol 11" best examples the fire and lack of discplilned structure, also called "ad libbing", from the 60's and the reunion concert demonstrates maturity and discipline, in that they chose their gear more carefully from the much larger selection of the 2000's, and also were way past having to impress anyone, so could play the way they wanted and select the notes that pleased themselves. I feel you could observe them both listening to, and enjoying the music, as much as playing for the audience.

The other acts recommended previously were all good in their own way with different things to offer.

The only act I simply cannot like is Rush. I absolutely hate that singer and bass player. He makes me punch the dashboard to get him off the radio. Rush never made it in Aust and were not played there. I do however remember our singer bringing in a double live LP some time in the 70;s and we listened to is for a few minutes and smashed the record against the wall. We all thought they were crap and an insult to a recording contract.

Obviously, many foreigners though otherwise, but that is what it takes to make a world I guess.

I am genuinely interested in the comments made here as I have never heard of any of these bands with the exception of Rush which I commended on earlier.

I could possibly understand if you'd not heard of Coroner, HOF, NMN and VF, but Primus??? Seriously??? You are either a) very young b) living in the middle if nowhere or c) both of the above!

All the bands I mentioned are great, bass driven combos and each have their own unique style and sound. I'm not going to give you any recommended listens, go and investigate for yourself...

Great thread...got a few to track down.
Here's one if you haven't checked out you'll wonder how it slipped throught cracks: Sonny Landreth (guitars, vox) with David Ransom on bass and Kenneth Blevins on drums. The Grant Street live recording is up there with any power blues trio any time anywhere.

I saw those guys, great stuff! Ransom is one of my favorite pick players.

Actually, I am 57 and been playing 40 years so both guesses are incorrect. I have learned that many Americans think they are the world, meaning, that if it happens here, it happens everywhere. Not so. Even my American wife says that most Yanks thing the world ends in the sands in LA.

The reality is that some bands that you know as legends are complete unknowns offshore, as exampled by the list you made, of which I have never heard of.

No big deal, as there are some great Aussie bands you will not have heard of, as most of the crappy ones were the ones played here in the US. Bands like INX were local jokes.
