Because very few outside the midwest know who he is. Great player, I engineered a hippy record he played on many years ago. It was way outside his comfort zone and the artist didn't believe in rehearsals ("gotta just feel it man") but Tufty pulled it off.
He was definitely punk back in the day. People don't consider him that now but if you'd seen him back in '87 you might change your opinion.
Agreed. He also sights a lot of gutter punk bands as major influences. Although he is not in a punk band he adapted the punk style and fused it with funk and rock. Created his own style really.

Funk rock jam band with punk overtones, maybe? I like their early stuff and Flea may be more punk than the R.H.C.P. or his style, cuz their really not.

Matt Freeman (Rancid), Karl Alvarez (Descendents), and Klaus Flouride (Dead Kennedys). Fat Mike (NOFX) has some tasty licks as well; certain riffs from the Decline come to mind. Also if you listen to the Rancid/NOFX split where they cover eachother's songs you can hear some sweet bass lines.

I was actually talking about the band Fear which played in from 1982-84.
