favorite scale or mode?

Diatonic major. Because it's the one that unlocks all the others. If you know that one (and really know it, not just be able to play it), then you'll be able to use all the others. Without owning the major scale, any other scale or mode is just finger wiggling.

as a guitar player the Dorian is definately my life long most used mode ala Another Brick in the WAll type progressions ....most of my playing on a country/classic rock gig is a big mix of blues scale, mixolydian, and dorian

if i want to show a student the sound of modes and character i'll often show a lydian sinse Satriani and Vai have made so much use of it for rock players

5th mode of the harmonic minor is a good metal mode to show...

as a bass player i'm usually only looking for my pentatonics be it major or minor, passing tones and root 5th root stuff......

Me too I second the major scale. It can be played over almost everything, even minor keys with great succes.

I enjoy a double octave gypsy minor into a dorian harmonic major topped off with phrygian scale back down.

I gravitate towards Phrygian. I mix in Aeolian fairly often and sometimes find myself in locrian. Those are good scales for metal.

There's something about an ascending locrian that I absolutely love... It just sounds medieval and somehow devilish. I noticed it once, I was either in A or C, but it caught my ear and I've loved it since. It's hard to make a good tune out of it though

i would say locrian is my favorite, i love the sound of minor chords and scales.

If you know a scale in one key, you know it in every key. Ionian is a the basic major scale. Lydian has a #4th interval and Mixolydian (my go to) has b7th. Aeolian is your common Minor scale (melodic not harmonic.) Phrygian has b2nd and Dorian (my other go to) has a #6th. The Locrian is a diminished mode. It is a minor scale with both a b2nd and b5th
Major Scales are basically the same from mode to mode with the difference of one note. Minor scales samething, with the exception of the locrian.
