Tell him to lock himself in his room with the ramones first album and not to come out till he knows it all. When he comes out hand him the blasters first album and send him back in.

Favorite Songs for a Beginner to Learn by Ear?

Kibble, milkbones, and P Basses. And redheads.
Look for stuff with an easy, but recognizable, melodic line - Harder to Breathe by Maroon Five is a great example.
For ear training: If hes a beginner, start off with songs where the bassline can plainly be heard.....try sing-songy melodic lines that arent too difficult but very tasty nonetheless that standout without too much concentration. Having him master hearing the low-hanging fruit will help him hear more complicated lines as part of the mix later.......... Some examples of what Im talking about:
Cream- sunshine of your love, Zeppelin- dazed & confused, Hendrix- fire, & RHCP- blood sugar sex magick were some of the first bass lines I learned

Luckily my guitar teacher understood that First riff I learned from my guitar teacher was the intro to civil war from guns n roses. was a song I loved, so I put the time into learning it. Doubt I would have been interested if I was learning twinkle twinkle little star.
Try this one. It's newer, hip, cool, easy, and teaches you pocket, R&B groove, and timing all in one song.

I whole heartedly agree with this statement...I realize the question at hand was about listening to a song and figuring out the notes, but I started playing some Sabbath tabs a while back and it REALLY helped me improve when I go to play other songs...
I am still very much a work in progress, but Geezer is absolutely taking me to school...
Just trying to learn the main riff on N.I.B. made me a better player (it also taught me to play on more of the fretboard as a lot of Metal bands I like usually camp out on the bottom string)...
Playing things on the E string sounds great to my ears, but after practicing some of those songs off the first two albums I feel like I have a much more accurate and faster left hand than I did before I started trying to play some of those songs...

The Cure have some great beginning ear training tunes. Boys Don’t Cry, A Forest, Just Like Heaven. Billy Idol’s Rebel Yell is great for 8th note training too.
I once had someone tell me that when you learn to play guitar you should try to learn Smoke On The Water for your first song bc it isn’t terribly hard, but once you learn the primary riff it gives you the illusion that you can play something...
I think this song was the bass equivalently that statement for me bc the main riff isn’t difficult and this song has a ton of groove in it (probably doesn’t hurt that I’ve heard this song about 5,000 times):

Some might find this interesting: back in 1995 I fiddled with the bass, and guitar enough to get my fingers used to moving around. I had zero idea about how to make good sound. I could copy simple songs pretty easily And thought that was cool, then when time came for me to get out of the army the first time, I went back home to Lakewood wa, where my friends were already making real ground in bands, some very famous bands, some just really good solid bands...anyways...I got a trial by fire and sink or swim learned how to keep time with a drummer who was already a pro at odd time sigs...that changed my world and my skill level 100%. I learned to keep time and make good fugazi style bass lines by doing it with a great drummer. Just get out there and do it! Songs don’t matter....play with a good drummer...that’s what breeds good bassists.
The first song I ever played on a bass guitar was Hotel California. I think it's a very appropriate song for what you want to do.
Have you looked at irigpro it’s a huge amount more than the real book in a digital format, you can change key and tempo, use it to write and store stuff, my teacher recommend to me recently you tube is good too Quist has some good free jam tracks
Khruangbin songs have real defined bass. The lines aren't super complex but they're tasteful and funky as hell
I have never learned a song by ear. Never even attempted, now that I think about it. I wouldn't know where to start.
Geez, I guess that statement right there sums up my ~10 years of playing/learning.
I have noticed that some song patterns "teach" scales without you knowing it -- Sympathy for the Devil, Satisfaction, Pink Houses. I wish I had started my journey trying to figure stuff like that out, rather than suddenly reaching an epiphany 10 years later...
