Favourite Scales

May I suggest the not so weird way? Studybass.com

There's no point in asking what peoples favorite scales are if you don't know much about the major scale and all its modes.

I didn't say I know no scales and modes. Actually I know but I need a lot more, and it's not only about learning new ones but also about listening to people's favourite ones.

Thank you

i an seriousness ...to the point ...you should start by learning the major scale all over the neck ...6 or 7 possible fingerings ....fingerings starting on the 1st finger, 2nd finger and pinky ..

you should also know the 5 blues scale box patterns in all keys

start with std used keys first like C D E G A F ....unless you play jazz ...then you gotta know all your flat keys well!

So I decided to learn some scales through a little weird way.
Guys how about writing your favourite scales and the notes that each one includes? (the root being always E)

I'll echo the points about value for the major scale above all othgers.. It's the reference point for everything else (in western music): modes, harmonies, synthetic scales, chromaticism etc...

I think of every scale as an alteration of the major scale:
major: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Minor: 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7
Maj pentatonic: 1 2 3 5 6
Min blues: 1 b3 4 b5 5 b7
etc...

I think of chords as intervals of the (2 octave) major scale
Major: 1 3 5
Minor : 1 b3 5
Dom 13: 1 3 5 b7 9 13
etc...

all that said, I get a kick out of what I know as the "altered" scale (I think its also called the diminished whole tone scale, and superlocrian)
used for improvising over altered Dominant chords in jazz. One way to see it is taking a normal Mixolydian scale ( 1 2 3 4 5 6 b7)
keep the root, 3rd and 7th (to outline the dominant chord), and play everything else "wrong":
1 b2 b3 3 b5 b6 b7
E F G Ab Bb C D

context wise the scale would cadentially move to an A

But the major scale = 10000x more practical to have a solid grasp of
