You have to like Victor Wooten for inventing double thump.

I find it hard to believe that Vic invented that technique.
Popularized it, sure; perhaps even perfected it.

I distinctly remember the first time I ever heard someone double thumping on a bass -- it was producer Maurice Starr, hanging out in a Boston music store on Boylston Street, in 1985 -- and I'm pretty confident Mr. Starr didn't know of Victor Wooten (who would've been what, 20 years old at the time?) since Vic didn't come to anyone's attention until the Flecktones' debut album circa 1990.

Happy to be proven wrong though.

Just quoting the popular wisdom. Possibly both came up with it independently. It's like Louis Johnson claims he was unaware of Larry Graham when he started slapping. And a cursory look at the respective style makes it at least plausible. Ain't like anyone copyrighted it.

Dang, I came up with my own double thumb after reading about Mr Wooten before anyone had an internet to post videos on. Just young Victor's one works much better at speed.

Indeed. He didn’t invent it. Nor did he pretend to. Larry Graham already double thumbed in the early seventies. Not sure if Larry invented it, but he was sooner. Maybe Victor saw it there or maybe he saw it from his brother, maybe he found it out himself, who knows.

I voted for Larry Graham. He invented thumpin' and pluckin' - the correct terminology for this method of bass playing! I'm not a thumper or plucker myself, but I do love thumpin' and pluckin' when done appropriately.

I also voted for Les Claypool (other option in the poll). He needs no introduction, especially for us bassists.
