FEA announcing new pedal Friday

took a 3 month hiatus from bumpin, now done on a quarterly basis. anyone out there have news? i recently line up my ~7 OD/fuzz/distortion units to see which one i liked most and didn't really like any of them, so the dragon i'm chasing is this FEA DBD2. Frank any news?

I'm guessing this is a case of "no news is no news". For me it's good news because I've been trying to have a frugal gear year (and succeeding... relative to my previous 5 years, anyway ;)). But I'm still bummed, because I've been looking forward to this.

2021 bump.

As we wait for news, one thing that's grabbing my attention is the upcoming UltraWave from Source Audio. The DBD2 is going to be great, but that's stiff competition.

I took the quickest of peeks at the Ultrawave page. I'm consistently amazed at how much functionality Source Audio can squeeze into such tiny boxes for such low prices... but while I'm not a total Luddite, it's just too much for me.

I get it: the Aftershock is priced so incredibly low that there's no worry about paying extra for tons of functionality I'd never use. Still, I'm old school enough that I don't want that much complexity in a stompbox: just give me something I can tweak with my physical digits, no binary ones required (i.e. PC or smartphone).

I'll keep my mind open and listen to some demos, just sayin' the UltraWave isn't going on my wish list just yet. Again... seems like a brilliant device, though.

I have the C4 and AS on my board and I totally get that. The only problem for me was that I wanted to get more than one or two tones out of the pedals and don't want to mess with settings at all on stage. So, for a while I was using a couple different envelope filters and a couple of different 'dirt' generators (a fuzz and a low gain pedal)... and the programability of the SA pedals cleared a lot of my board. It also added the need to have a controller, but in the end that simplified my stage time. One button is way better than tap-dancing on a bunch of them.

I have great admiration for bassists like you who have to (or simply want to) jump between a wide variety of FX settings. If I needed to be a tone/fx chameleon I'd jump into programmability, for sure! But I don't: over my career I've typically used a single tone all night long. Since replacing my rack rig with pedals 5-6 years ago, I've preferred to bring 2-3 dirt pedals for a bit of variety... but that's mostly been for my own entertainment. The only possible need would be the bass break in "Dance to the Music", but even then, my bandmates don't care whether or not I dirty that up. So yeah, I have it easy.

I lived that way for a long long time too...Then a bunch of years ago, the band that's been my project for the better part of a decade was in the studio to record a follow up to our album and the producer said "you've got a really really killer bass tone...but don't you want to try some other tones or textures just to widen your palate?" and from there I stopped looking at songs and writing for them as just about the bass line in melodic or rhythmic terms but also in terms of tone colors and textures that might help drive the song in different ways. So...that's where I end up. But once I have a think I want to do for a song, I don't really change that appreciably, so it can be 'locked in'.
