fEARful part 13: the bad luck's done, son

That is not what my GAS meter wanted to hear! A kickback feature sounds awesome.

by the way, with the 8" cab (or Crazy 8 as Greenboy has dubbed them) I just took an order for one with a spring loaded handle as a kick back. First run will be done in about 2 weeks. Before Greenboy and I agreed on dimensions I had built my first prototype that is 1" shallower. There are pics of the prototype in composite(acoustic cab shootout thread) and a review on the DB side. The final version will be a bit better in the low end. (the low end is already pretty astonishing for an 8--but you know Greenboy---he likes that low end!) Composite weight for the tweeterless is about 9.4 lbs.---add about 2.2
lbs for the tweet version.

What are the crossover freqs for the 8.1? I'm wondering if these would make a good home studio/theater listening solution?

Hey Mr Pickles,

I'll say it again for those who haven't heard it yet: a single number describing a crossover frequency means very little unless discussing a "textbook" crossover that was arrived at without taking the drivers responses into consideration and not bothering to design for those drivers specifically. As soon as you actually look at and accommodate actual driver FR and impedance curves, listing a single number is a marketing spec sheet number that doesn't begin to describe things.

That said, I guess I could say 4000 Hz. Or maybe it's 4300 Hz. Oh damn - now you have ME doing it! ; }

The Crazy8 cabs would be pretty good as casual monitors in a n:1 setup. But if I were designing a nearfield for critical work, I'd be using less sensitive drivers and probably smaller drivers that fit the job better, and the crossovers would have more components and be heavier.

Yep. But what I said above figures into this. Think of what a double knee filter circuit does, or a dual-knee compressor. It's a lot like having two crossover points at different frequencies to accommodate the driver characteristics a lot better.

I have discovered the flaw in my Fearfuls...they are SO transparent that they have revealed all the corroded jacks in my rack rig. :cool: Had to make a run to Radio Shack yesterday for DeOxit!

Here's the Crazy8. In deference to the superstitious the height will be changed to 13.25" on the production models.
