Female Bass Players

Give me a break. In the music business, you take advantage of any advantage you have or you're an idiot. Not saying a woman should sleep her way to the top, of course, but if you got it, flaunt it. Me'shell does the same in her own way, trust me. She might not be a stunning beauty but you can bet your butt that whatever she has, she rocks it, whether it's songwriting abilities, an ability to lead others, a drive to be the best she can be, strong charisma, or whatever.

Christy Lichtenstein should be added. I mean what' not to like about bass playing stunt pilot with her own Pitts Special.

The same thing gets debated over and over again every time someone posts about "female bass players," especially the youtubers. How much talent vs. how much cleavage? They're all fine, pretty good chops, and if they were male, 50, or overweight, nobody at all would be raving about how great they were (I don't mean that of all female bass players - I mean the youtuber/Marta Altesa/Anna Sentina types). None of them ever seem to go on to do anything relevant beyond Youtube.
Among women who play bass, there are lots who are better than the three in the OP, most of whom have already been named. Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads/Tom Tom Club) has fantastic groove. Esperanza, Tal, Carol Kaye, obviously. Rhonda Smith, Nik West, Divinity Roxx, Julie Slick, just to name some others who come to mind. I'm not so into Kim Deal, I kind of felt like she was the bass equivalent of Meg White on drums - limited player who made a virtue of her limitations and the band made it work.

I have a lot of disdain for the "YouTuber" musician thing in general, no matter what their gender is. The guitarist in my band knows a internet-famous drummer pretty well. The guy has millions of YouTube views, tons of Instagram followers, invitations to NAMM, pro endorsements, etc. All from just playing along to cover tracks. My guitarist did an actual gig with him, and said he wasn't that great with a live band. He also said he spent more time setting up his GoPro than he actually did playing.

Thank you man I appreciate that and well... I mean that wasn't really the main reason why, I probably should've stated that! Lol sorry, but it was because it was out of the country for 2 months, I didn't have a passport, and the drummer literally called me like the day before to tell me I would've had to leave the next day. It was a hard decision, but I had to think about if I was really prepared to be on stage with like 3 million people looking at me, I think I could've, but I still didn't think it was the right time. I know if it would've been in the states I probably would've went, but hey it's alright I have no regrets. I also got offered to do some studio work with the famous producer RedOne, so I have that still going for me, even if not I know something will come along, just got to think positive!

To me, that's exactly what makes them good at what they do. Not a huge White Stripes fan really, but I dig em somewhat. Imagine Stewart Copeland or Neal Peart backing up Jack White. Imagine Jaco or Flea in the Pixies. Imagine Les Claypool in The Ramones...they could pull off what those bands needed, but if they played like their regular styles it would be ludicrous.
Sometimes lack of technical skill and flash is a musician's or a band's strength.
I admire great skill and wizardry, and I like a lot of music that showcases that, but it's not why I listen to music.
Stellar playing ability or a million-note, perfectly executed solo or whatever never made a bad song better.
I get what you're saying. I did say the Pixies "made a virtue of her limitations," and I do mean a virtue. Jack White said he liked that Meg played drums like a caveman. I do like what she did on drums in that act. But I'm not going to put Meg White on my list of best drummers - what she did was right for that band, but that doesn't make her the best. And I wasn't talking exclusively about chops. I put Tina Weymouth at the top of my list of female bassists, and she's not a chops monster - just has a REALLY good head for groove.
Ya, getting a passport the same day is a real PITA. I've done it, and for me it involved a 4 hour drive to Miami and sitting around the passport office all day. Not fun. Understandable. Yeah, with you getting that kind of interest already, you'll get stuff happening. Good for you...just don't forget who told you to make your big glasses your gimmick when people start referring to you as "The cute gal with the big glasses who can really play"

Plus, I am something of a caveman player myself. I can get more nuanced and play with some finesse; I just usually don't...
