Fender 08 MIA Jazz

I've heard good things about this bass and I want to get one. How much should I expect to pay for one of these? I'm assuming itd be hard to find one used...as it is the newest model.

By the way, Guitar Center employees, how much do you guys make on commission? Like how much could I haggle the price down before I looked stupid? (Be Honest, I'm in Missouri so I won't come to your Guitar Center and try to lowball you)

When I see threads like this, I don't understand why people don't do a search. Is it because they are lazy?

Since you asked, I've got a '08' MIA Jazz V, it's an excellent bass. I don't like the bridge pup, so I swapped it with a Bartolini 57J1. Though the Bart bridge is much better, the jury is still out on whether I want to keep it or not. Reason being, that both pups full up (Bart & USA) don't sound as good as both USA pups both full on. If I roll off the Bart bridge pup the USA neck pup sounds killer, growls for days. I paid $1249.99 thru Musician's Friend.

But really, next time do a search.:eyebrow:

Actually i did do a search, you should try to before you judge, i've looked at all of those posts.
there are many positive threads about it, but not many negative. I don't understand why everyone assumes that noone searches...

Heres a challenge : You go search and find how much people are paying for 2008 American Standard Jazz basses for used. And then you go out and find at least 5 negative feedback about it. My posts contains many questions, just because its about American Standard Jazz 2008 doesn't mean that the threads that exist about it answer all of my questions.

There have been a number of them for sale here on TB. Why don't you go to a GC or someplace near you that has one and try it and decide for yourself if they're for you.

I will, but its also nice to know why people go to GC and bring home one of these basses just to sell them in the same year...Just because I like it at the music store doesnt mean ill like it 5 months down.

Geez, I thought I was the one with the questions....

Mine should be coming in tommorrow. Its the Jazz V. If you want, i'll let you know what I think about it and the difference between it and my 07 MIA Jazz V.

I would like that very much, even though I am only wanting a 4 string. But that would be kind of you

Well to be fair, you can find several F/S threads on new american standard basses in about 30 sec. I don't exactly know how much buyers are paying for them, but it looks like sellers want about $850-$900.

Here's a couple.

And I know it's hard to search specifically for negative posts but they're not that rare either. If you have read all those posts like you claimed, you should have found several.

Yeah, i did find one post about some negative. Not many though. The first link is a precision...And the second link that you posted could have been a 2007 bass, I wanted to specifically know about 2008.

OK, then, pay attention: Everyone I know of who's had one for more than a month is dismayed by the fragile-as-spun-glass finish.

The ones in the stores are already so chewed up by floor trolls by the time they're sold that I seriously doubt Fender will keep this feature as it's a real problem for retailers.

its funny that a forum for bass guitarists, probably one of the silliest ideas ever (to sit and type and read rather than practice), is so unwilling to just answer people's questions. to the supporting members who pride themselves on dropping money on an internet forum (for what?) and who complain and moan about people who don't search: suck it up pansies! if it weren't for people like homeboy who want to know about certain things like fdr am. std. 08, who would talk on this forum?

i too looked at these basses for a while after reading a lot of mostly good things. IME, i found a few that were good but i was never blown away like i expected. take that with a grain of salt, i never ended up taking one home (went with another American brand...) but suffice it to say i like j basses, had the cash to drop on one and ended up passing for something else which ended up costing more but was worth every penny.

+1 - I get tired of that snobbish anti-newb response myself.

There's usually at least one '08 Jazz or Precision, 4 or 5 string, for sale every week in the TB classifieds. Keep watching, your ideal bass will float by. The strategy for finding the best deal is to be patient; if your eyes are open, you will eventually see what you want.

If you want to buy new - I've read posts on TB from people who have paid as low as $800-850. I paid the asking price of $1049 CDN, with no haggling because I was impatient. :) But the patience strategy has always worked in the past in those times when I was able to control myself.

Add me to that list.
I`ve had the chance to play one, and never saw a finish so fragile. It got dinged and scratched so easily, that I couldn`t believe it.

I believe the thinner nitro they`re currently using is the main factor. It lets the bass "breathe" a lot more giving it a more airy, lively sound, but at the same time, it protects less the instrument.

Another thing (that`s purely personal) is that the neck profile is thicker than previous years, so I found it slower.

The rest of the things about 2008 Jazzes are just great. Construction, hardware (bridge, tuners, truss rod, etc.), sound have improved over previous years.

Just my .002

I paid $1049 at the local mom and pop shop last June. Worth it to me. I play it more than my Stingray and is my first call bass for recording.

Haven't had any issues with the finish, but then again I don't gig and am very mindful about handling my gear. Still has everything stock (even the strings) on it and it plays and sounds great for me.

These show up in the classifieds semi often and IMHO are a great used deal at $800-$900.

As always, go play one and find out for yourself. I played 4-5 of them between GC and the local mom and pop before I bought mine.
