When I wrote that "Flatwound Roundtable" article for the Seymour Duncan blog years ago, the Fender flats were the set that, if I had to pick a non-GHS set of flats to play, it would be these. There's a character that I really enjoyed in the strings that the others didn't have.
Although others have said much the same, I didn't find that in my set. Perhaps it's the heavier gauge that is the magic key.
Well, the E string in my set (105) was also zingy. All 4 strings in the CL pack. I suppose if I would have kept at it for a few more months, the set would have mellowed in.
See? I didn't get that. In fact the entire set was zing and clang free right out of the pack. "Curiousier and curiousier"

9050CL vs. 9050L ....
The 105E seems to work better on my J with plenty of punch and definition, while it tended to get a little muddy on my P. If I were to try the 9050 again on my P, I would probably go with the 9050L.

I've had a set of them on my '78 P-bass for about 2 years now. They are great strings, and they do sound very nice on the P, but... I think they're coming off soon. I'm leaning towards something more like the original flats that lived under that mute in the bridge cover. Like maybe some GHS Precision Flats...
This, I think, will be their new home. For what I like to play on the Fender, they are just too well balanced. Which, I'm thinking, should be the cat's ass on my Eastwood Magnum...
I think the defenition of 'zingy' and 'clangy-metally' seems to vary a great deal. As always different basses, fingers, bridges, nuts gives us different opinions.
I've tried the Fender flats a couple of times on different basses and for me they fall in the Chromes category of too bright flats.
And if I want brightness and sparkle I'll go with a roundwound string, and I don't want to wait a couple of months for the magical sound to appear. I have gigs during those two months too and want the sound and feel to be right.
That said I know from experience that if I keep the strings and try them on another bass another time they might fit me much better then. It has happened before
