For the first time in about ten or eleven years, I'm considering some modification work on my first-ever bass, a CIJ Export Edition Aerodyne Jazz. So far, all I've changed are strings and added a Hipshot BT10 Drop-D tuner. Otherwise, it's completely stock.
Recently, I bought a Fender Pure Vintage '63 Precision pickup from the TB Classifieds that could likely end up going into my Aerodyne. Now, I'm wondering what would be a good bridge pickup to complement the neck pickup. There's a nice, high-output DiMarzio Ultra Jazz pup in the classifieds that looks promising, but I'm always open to suggestions. Any thoughts?
Additionally, have an Elek-Trix/Santellan Sounds wiring harness that's solderless, has a variable tone capacitor value and can switch between parallel and series by pulling up the bridge-volume pot. If it fits, I'm considering dropping it in, even if I don't replace the pickups.

I have a PV 63 P pickup in my JP-90 and asked which bridge pickup would go well with it. Folks here, and I believe at DiMarzio, suggested the Area J as a good complement. I haven’t upgraded yet, so I have no personal experience with the pickups. You might compare the specs of the Area J and the Ultra Jazz on the DiMarzio site to determine whether the pup for sale here would work. Or you could call DiMarzio and ask them.
DiMarzio's site was one of the first places I checked. I haven't reached out to them, yet, but looked up their listed output and EQ ratings. Here's what they report;
- Area J
- Output 155 (the lowest they report is 140, highest is 250)
- Bass 2.5
- Low Mid 4.0
- High Mid 4.0
- Treble 4.5
- Ultra J
- Output 250
- Bass 6.0
- Low Mid 5.5
- High Mid 4.0
- Treble 7.0
I’m interested to find out what you choose and how well it matches with the PV 63.DiMarzio's site was one of the first places I checked. I haven't reached out to them, yet, but looked up their listed output and EQ ratings. Here's what they report;

Given how powerful and thumpy the Pure Vintage 63's are, I'm inclined to pair it with a high-output, humcancelling bridge pickup. If these stats are accurate, it looks like the Ultra J might be the way to go. That being said, I'm looking for more ideas.

Okay guys, I need a number to join the club.
My White Aerodyne Precision arrived today and after playing it at rehearsal tonite I have mixed feelings about it.
The fit and finish is near perfect. It’s absolutely beautiful. It weighs 8.2 lbs. the neck is awesome and the bass plays like butter. There is a little bit of neck dive so I’ll be looking to replace the tuners with something lighter.
It sounded okay, but much too mellow for my taste. New pickups will be one of the first things I’ll do. I have some Wilkinson, Kiesels and Laklands in stock and any of those will wake this thing up.
Also I may switch to all black hardware (just a personal preference).
If anyone has had the same experience with their Aerodyne Precision, please chime in with any recommendations you my have. I’m keeping the bass but it needs some changes/upgrades.

Same here, funny enough! I just replaced my Aerodyne Special Precision pickup out for an EMG Geezer to calm it down a bit, haha! The only thing I've played that was hotter/more agressive than the Aerodyne P is the Dimarzio DP127 split-rail P pickup I have in another build. That thing is bonkers!
That's strange. I merely plugged it into my amp with the same settings that I've used on my other ones and I had to boost the gain to get it up to where it needed to be. Also, the lows were there more so than the mids, and the highs were very thin. I'm not at all disappointed in the bass, just the pickups/sound. I just replaced the stock strings hoping that will make a difference.
Weird! That almost sounds like a defective pickup or something. Or maybe ne cranked SO FAR down into the body that its output is greatly diminished. Or maybe something weird in the wiring.
When I wired up my Geezers I had the positive and ground on the wrong tabs at first. The lugs on the weird recessed jack in the Aerodyne aren't the same as your normal Soundcraft jack, haha! Anywho, I had a SUPER low output that was similarly muddled. I had to crank the Mesa TT800 it was plugged into WAY up to get usable volume. I wondered if I had ruined something else... I looked over the diagram and closely followed my wiring, etc and everything looked right, except I had no reference for that crazy output jack. I swapped the wires on the lugs as a troubleshooting option and WHAMMO! Problem solved. I wonder if something that silly happened with yours. I feel like that should have been caught at the factory, but I worked at a factory... poop happens and makes it through QC way more often than anyone wants to admit, haha!

Anywho, sounds like you have lots of good options on hand regardless of whether you can get the existing pickup/electronics to work properly. I do wish you could experience the same output the rest of have with this Aerodyne Special Precision... I feel like you'd love it! Best of luck!

Same for me.
I did a side by side with my MIM 50s Classic and the Aerodyne is louder and has harsher highs and high mids.
Well I did a side-by-side comparison with another P-Bass and the Aerodyne was actually a little hotter.
I now realize the problem. I have an Eden stack at rehearsal. A friend of mine rehearses there as well and I let him use my amp. He plays a Steinberger and you need to EQ the hell out of the amp to make them sound acceptable. It was the EQ on my Eden that had been messed with.
I’m keeping the current pickups and volume control, but will be switching out the tone control for a Stellartone Tonestyler. I’m going to start looking for all black hardware (knobs, bridge, tuners, strap buttons, string tree, etc.
If anyone knows the diameter of the headstock tuner holes, please let me know. I’m going to start looking for lighter tuners.

I started trying to find the tuner hole diameter on my 2024 Aerodyne Special Precision. I’ve been going through some of the later posts to see if that info was available. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? Worst case scenario, I’ll remove a tuner and mic the hole.
