Fender Aerodyne Club!

Here's a scan from the 2004 Fender Japan catalog.

There were 2 versions, the AJB-58 and the AJB-65. There was a 7,000 yen difference in prices between the two (when I bought mine in '04, the exchange rate was in the neighborhood of 120 yen per dollar). The only difference in the specs is that the AJB-58 has a standard bridge, and the AJB-65 has a "TP-AJB Special". From the pic, it looks like the AJB-58 also differs in that it has has chrome hardware and fretboard markers, while the AJB-6 has black chrome hardware, and no markers on the fretboard. My earlier post was wrong - according to the catalog, the AJB-65 was only available in black (BLK) and red (OCR), while the AJB-58 was available in both colors, as well as grey (DFG).

Anyhow, just thought I'd share for general Aerodyne history/info for fans. I'll post pics of mine later, providing I can figure out how.....

This is my Aerodyne-It's a 2004 AJB-65 that I picked up when I lived in Japan. Paid around 60,000 yen for it (exchange rate was around 120 yen/dollar at the time), so it would have been about 500 US dollars. Hard to tell from the pic, but the hardware is black chrome. I replaced both the P and J pickup with Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders. The nut chipped on the E side, so I replaced it with a graphite nut.
I bought a Badass II to replace the stock bridge, but as many others have pointed out, it wouldn't fit into the recess without routing, and I didn't want to do that.
I fell in love with this bass the first time I picked it up. It's also my first new bass -- I had been playing various cheapo used gear, and when it was time to buy something that was new, I tried various basses, and none really felt or sounded right until I picked up this one. I had planned on getting a Steve Harris signature P (CIJ version; love the look, love the artist), but kept coming back to this one.
I'm a P&W player, and this has been my #1 for 8 years now, and it hasn't let me down. The pic is from the stage at church - the amp is a Carvin R600 2x10 with a 18 underneath (we've got 3 separate worship teams, and this particular amp belongs to a former pro who's an elder at the church). I've got a SWR Silverado Special that I use for backup. My signal runs through a Sonic Research tuner pedal and a Sansamp BDI.

The Babicz will not fit into the recess as it has a bigger dimension than the stock bridge. For the recess what I did was use aluminium foil and folded them (7 folds actually) to the exact size of it, and then put on the bridge as how you would normally.

No issues with the Babicz so far. Fits well and plays well. :)

Don't be hiding from us Bassmanmke1. That is one beautiful build you have going there. I love the stained back by the way. Though I don't think we can bestow official membership since it's not a Fender, i think we can make you an honorary member at the very least.

Guys, if you have not seen the build yet, definitely check it out. This takes "build" to a higher level than most of what you have seen before.

My first good bass was a black 67 jazz with a tort pickguard, blocks and binding. Wish I still had it but that's another story. When I saw an Aerodyne for the first time a couple years ago, I immediately had G.A.S. Well it's been 28 years since I had a four string in the stable, and after having completed my first build in spring of this year, I decided to do an Aerodyne type bass for my second. Can't wait until it's done.

Promised mike a pic or my AJB-65 BLK but in the meantime I would like to ask if anyone else have had a problem with the smoked chrome corroding? I was sick for a while and it was stored in a damp atmosphere. It plays as week as ever but the bridge, neck plate and. Control knobs have all corroded to some degree. Any ideas on regaining the showroom shine?

Mine has corroded a bit on the tuners and knobs, but totally on the bridge, which I replaced with a bad ass bridge, had no problems since. Also I have a silicone gel packet in the case to absorb moisture.

I just wanted to show off the family. They are all situp the same with INFELD flat wound bass strings and Hipshot bridges. The one in the middle is the newest and maybe my favorite. I bought the body from a TB member out of Austin Tx and I found the Japaneses fretless Jazz neck on eBay. I add Hipshot hardware and Nordstrand NPJ4SE - 4 String P/J Pickup Set. The sound and playability is nothing short of amazing. I hope you like them and that this will get me in the club. If so I would love a number.

Is that a Berg AE210 vertical with the Streamliner? I'm thinking about trying my Aerodyne with an AE210v. and a clean tube amp. Wondering how that combo would sound. I presume you like your combination! With that pair, does the fretless sound a bit dark or does the cab's low-mid and mid boost brighten it up?

Ukiah Bass, I think the Berg, streamliner is about as close to perfect as it gets. Now let me clarify that by saying I have only been playing bass for about 9 months and I don't have that much experience. While I play in the church band I am very much a beginner. As for as the tone, it is definitely not dark. I can make it dark but to me it sounds amazing. Feel free to email me and I will give you my phone number. Your welcome to hear it over the phone since I am in Texas and your in Cal. I don't know if that will work but your welcome to try.

Thanks for the offer. I used to own a Streamliner. I have an all-tube amp coming next month. I plan to use the Aerodyne and record how it sounds through various combinations of cabs and amps. I'm using it now in a jazz project exclusively with the P pickup on and the J pickup off.

FWIW, I started another thread exploring ways to dampen or mute the strings of the Aerodyne to help in a jazz context. Lots of discussion and photos here:
