OK. Well I am a man of my word and since I am in charge of the numbers for now I bestow on Bassmanmike1 Fender Aerodyne Club Member #45. Even though it is not a Fender built instrument I feel that it is a worthy member of our club. I trust that the other members here agree.

Oh, and BTW, be sure to post the sound clips here too.

This member agrees. I'm trying to find the right phrase for this beastie - a wolf in sheeps clothing is not quite right!! But such flattery to the Aerodyne "look" deserves the membership number!

Thanks for the vote of confidence StoutFellow, the word you might be looking for is homage. :D
If you look at my sig I put honorary member so as not to ruffle the purists feathers, which is pretty apt because I do feel honored to be in such company.
I post this just to put you all at ease, because you know how much we all hate controversy here on TB :hiding:

Okay. I've been mulling this over. Does the Duff O'Dyne count? Aerodyne body, Duff neck...

Hmm......that looks familiar, basslines, and is that a badass bridge. I even had a set of mightymite knobs like that I was going to use but opted for the Aerodynes instead. If it was up to me Catbuster I'd say yes, but then I'm just an honorary member. lol :)

Although it wasn't the first bass I wanted to get, I always greatly admired the look and versatility of the Aerodyne (Mad Love for the P/J config!!). Sadly, the price was too high, especially for my first…

I found a listing for a used Aerodyne on the website of a chain of pawn shops down in Alabama. I called them to ask for some pictures. Just before the end of the day, I got them. Despite the bits of road wear on the finish (many have said "Leave it. It gives it character"), at $376 shipped you can bet yer a$$ I made it mine the next morning.

Currently it's sporting D'addario EXPR170's "Reds" (copper-plated, 45-100) and a Hipshot Drop-D Tuner.

On the "Cool Factor" end of things, both times I took it into two different music stores (one for set-up & strings, another for gear) someone stopped in mid-stride and shouted "Is that an Aerodyne?!". That, plus the fact that the set-up showed that structurally it was in great shape, told me I'd stumbled upon something special.

Since "she was my first" I'm humbly asking for a number in this club first.

Oh, and I couldn't call myself a "Proud Bass Owner" if I didn't post the family photo as well.

Yes, it is. I bought it as a one off from a dude in Toronto. I can't say I'm enamored with the quarter pounders, though. But man does this thing play nice. I'm dropping in a '62 P/Hot Stack J when they arrive.

I sold it to get cash for a new Sandberg 5-stringer. I will join a rock cover band after christmas, with quite a lot of paid bar type gigs, so I needed a new five stringer. Could not justify having two good 4 stringers and no fiver.

But given that I have owned 2 Aeros, I can definately say I'll get a new one someday, just love them. MIJ is for the win, as they say. Great build quality, and "feels right for me".

Definitely interested in one of these but have a few questions for the "club" members:

1. Why basswood - for such a nice bass Id think they'd be made in a more durable wood.

2. Some CIJ, some MIJ - is there a big difference n the quality? I here only buy the MIJ models.

3. Fender use to make a P model that now selling on the used market for a slight premium - is the tone between the Aero jazz and P that different?

4. are these short scale basses?

Can't really speak to 1 & 2 so much.

3. Mine is a P/J. Is that what you mean? Looks more like a P but has a J pup closer to the bridge.

4. It's a 34" scale.

My 2 cents:

1. Basswood, or linden, I think has a bad rep because it's cheap. My experience is it's light and nice, and it produces a "darker" tone with good sustain. Quote from the 'net: "Several [Fender] Japanese reissue models use Basswood [as body material]. Produces a light (body wt less than 4 lb.) guitar though some people find the sound to be too "dark". Basswood is a very soft wood and cannot handle a lot of abuse. Ideal for loud high gain tones [when used as body material]. The sound is smooth, without many sharp edges. Attack is moderate and sustain is round and even."

This fits well with my own experience (owned and played two Aeros, one 2010 export version w/o pickguard, one 1996 non-export with pickguard). Of course, if you play in a punk/ska band, I'd consider the disadvantages of the softness of the wood, but not been a problem for me.

2. There are other threads on CIJ vs MIJ, just search for them.

3. Hard to give a short answer (meaning less than a three hour lecture) to this question, and I'm not sure I understand the question? Fender used to make "a" model that sells on the market for a slight premium? Fender Japan, I assume?

4. As BassGen says, they are 34".

A tip: check out www.kurosawagakki.com, turn on google translate, and check out the basses there. 99% are basswood, 34" and P/J. Decent prices there too, at least for a norwegian :P
