Oh... My bad, then. I appologize. I wasn't aware of the many different variations.

My GAS goes towards the black Fender Aerodyne Jazz bass, as shown in this picture. I am no fan of pickguards on my basses, and just love the pure, all black design on this one:

If it was available as a 5 string at a reasonable price, I would be in heaven. But since I am not an owner, I realize I am a bit Off Topic in this thread. I will therefore not try to find a seller here, but rather state my enthusiasm for this design.

I've actually seen a couple of those on eBay, but at higher prices than I have in my budget. But being black, 5 string and Aerodyne, I may be able to live with the pickguard on that one. But for now the price is out of my range.

Understandable. I just checked the website I ordered my Aero from, kurosawagakki.com, they charge around 140-150k YEN (including freight to Norway) for a AJB-V it seems: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Yes, that sounds about right. And it is very much outside my budget.

Nicer than what? Many of the ones on kurosawagakki og ishibashi or fenderjapan are the non-export version with pickguards, and more color options, if that's what you mean.

Yeah, it looks sweet. I noticed when I got my AJB in dolphin gray that it looked a lot less purple, and a lot more gray than in the picture.

Did a complete upgrade on the hardware just a week ago. The stock bridge has been replaced by a Babicz, pickups with SD Basslines SPB-2/SJB-2 and the machine heads with Hipshot Ultralites.

Lovely!! I take it that your bass was bought in Japan - the USA model has no pickguard or control plate. Or perhaps you added the pickguard?

I put a Babicz on mine and it certainly looks an order of magnitude better than the stock bridge.

Lots of them are CIJ (if not all?) but there are varying versions by market. Mine is a P/J bought in Canada and it has a pick guard. But I do see many J's yhat do not have pick guards around here.

I bought mine in 2004 when I was living in Japan (candy apple red, no PG/plate). Ill see if I can dig up the Japan Fender catalog from that year that shows the different models and put up a scan for reference.

I think this information is backwards. I bought my Aerodyne here in the US six years ago and didn't see any sign of pickguards from the various retailers. Still don't. And the bass says "Crafted in Japan."

It certainly wouldn't be the first time I was wrong! I recall the music shops I went to in Japan (okinawa, specifically) only had the non pg models on the shelf in black, red and gray. The versions with a pick guard were listed in the catalog, but I was told they were special order. If I remember correctly, the versions with the pickguard were designated AJB-58, and were less expensive than non-pg models (AJB-62, I think). I tried to google the 04 fender japan catalog (TWANG!), but my server at work blocked the results. Ill look for the catalog when I get home.

I am looking to change out the bridge on a build I am doing. How well did the Babicz fit into the recess on your bass. I used hipshots on the non pick guard model but it will not fit on the one that is recessed.
