Fender American Precision Pro II V

Hard to describe. The v-mod II lacked focus and clarity, seemed like it had all the wrong mids. It just had a very sterile sound to me. The Nordstrand is tight, dynamic, sits better in the mix, and doesn’t have that compressed feel meaning it puts out what you put in- dig in and the pickup follows you.
I got a deal on the Tone Drop and like I said I probably wouldn’t spend the money again. It’s great but I can’t tell the difference between it and just having a 0.1uf cap.
Yeah, the stock one just sounds "choked" for lack of a better term. The Nordy does not. Mine is a first gen AMpro.

"Choked" is the description I was looking for when describing the AM Pro II P5's V-Mod II pickup. It didn't sound bad or unusable on the first couple of gigs with it, but I went with the Lindy Fralin P5 single-coil pups and I'm much happier. More open, I guess, a little brighter and sweeter-sounding to my haggard ol' ears.
I just got my P5 back from the local guitar guy. I was getting a little buzz on the open strings and I couldn't work it out, so I took it to him to look at.
He said "you have two choices" (doncha love that!....
)"Either lighten up your touch some or let's replace the nut with a very slightly higher string height at the first fret"
Arrggh.....
I've been trying to lighten my touch up for several years, but I've given up and I just friggin' play the things.
So we went with a new bone nut.
I really can't tell a difference with the new nut. It feels and plays as good as it always did, but with no buzz on the open strings now. He tells me that it wouldn't have killed Fender to set the original nut just a tick higher, but it was fine for most reasonable players. I find it odd that at my age, my touch is considered "moderate to heavy", but it is what it is. And I really enjoyed sitting and playing it on my studio/office last night, instead of the usual Stingray Special that's in my profile pic.
So far, I've added the Lindy Fralin pups (Fralin's very first P5 pups, I got to audition them for Fralin. VERY pleased with the tone and they are offered on the site now), the gold anodized aluminum pickguard, and a Hipshot Xtender.
Considering what I was used to playing in FSOs, I'm quite happy with this bass. Please excuse the usual awful bedroom pic.
(Yes, I'm gonna revisit the intonation later tonight, but I didn't hear any issues with it as it's set....)
I have a Pro P5 with the Nordstrand and a Pro II P5 with the stock VMod II. I prefer the Nordy, my guitar player prefers the VMod II. I mostly use the Pro II as a result. I think it sounds great - but the Nordstrand seems to have a richer array of harmonics on the lower open strings. More high mids I guess.
The VMod II suits me well and I’m very happy with it. I do find my happiness with it to be string type and brand dependent. The stock Fender strings that came on it or S.I.T. PowerWound Nickel work well in my experience. I tried sone highly regarded stainless steel strings on it recently and couldn’t get them off quick enough. YMMV
