Fender American Std Precision V: Which color?

opinions are nice, yea but really this is your baby and you gotta choose. take the one you just keep going back to. been there done that......
myself i just had to go with the classic sunburst/tort/rosewood........i just kept going back to that configuration no matter what else i thought i might choose. make it yours......!! all yours.

Candy Cola is awesome, especially with the white pg, and definitely only in maple. Can't go wrong with it, it's total rock and roll!! CAR is fine, but I think it's awesome that Fender does new colours and keeps the old ones off market - that is what makes them classics, after all. The modern Candy Cola is a very pretty, very hot colour. And it needs a white pickguard and a maple neck. :-)

Maple with black and a BWB pickguard would still be my preference - when I bought my AS 4 string in 2008, I wobbled between the black and maple, and the Oly/rosewood. I really liked the Oly and rosewood - a lot! But like the previous poster said, go with the one you keep coming back to - for me, that was black and maple with an aftermarket Fender BWB pg.

Sunburst - they're like pennies - a dime a dozen. Unless it's a vintage pre-1970 or you're in an alt country band, bah humbug to them.

I just tried a very nice 'burst at the local GC. Very nice instrument indeed. Light too. I am tempted to buy that one because it is a known quantity. How consistent are they? Am I taking a big chance ordering one?

Just speaking from newer MIA 4 string P's, they are fairly consistent. I've got 3 and they are all fairly close in weight, fit, finish, etc.

The only one that I bought sight unseen is the heaviest (just over 8.5lbs), but everything else about it is very good.

Would you be able to post some pics of your bass? The local stores did not have anything on Candy Cola for me to look at. I would appreciate it.

Yep. Here it is under a few different lighting conditions:

1. This picture's gotten a *lot* of exposure on TB, but it's a good one anyway.

Here is is under crappy bar lighting.

Different bar, St-Patrick's week.

Seeing the Cola maple next to my Roscoe Beck V in CAR shows the distinct difference in the two colors. The cola is darker, almost a blood red compared to the CAR. The Beck is a more flashy instrument especially with the matching headstock. Since I'm doing less flash lately the P5 is getting alot of my play time.

Has it had exposure due to how close it is to the water? Yikes!!

Very pretty, very rock and roll - ya can't go wrong.

Speaking for 4-bangers only, I've played dozens in stores since 2008, owned a 2008 for two years and a 2010 for a month before swapping it for an AVRI, and owned a couple American-mades prior to 2008. The 2008 and later ones have been consistently well done. There have been occasional stories on TB of cases where folks bought one online and it turned up with a misaligned neck due to shipping, but considering the volume shipped by Musicians Friend, Music 123, Sweetwater, etc I'm sure the vast majority are silently happy with their transactions. I think it's a safe bet to order online, if you can't go play a few.

But if you're ordering online, you may as well check out the Talkbass Classifieds. Always a deal there, and it'll be one owned by a fellow bass player, possibly handpicked from a store and very likely treated well, but you don't have to pay for depreciation.

I get asked that a lot. I'll tell you that I had the occasional tummy twinge when I was setting that shot up.

When I first bought it, I wanted to replace the pg with a white pearl one, but I've really come around on it as is.

Mmmm.... I like the white, but white pearl would also be sweet! Are aftermarket pickguards hard to find for these?

As artists, we are primarily driven to express our personal aesthetic. I can not, for the life of me, understand why you need other opinions on what color to chose. Kinda creepy.

Do need help picking a woman too? Post some pics, I'll let you know.... :hmm:

Not really, though you can't always get what you want from Fender, and outfits like Jeannie's Pickguards may need you to send your guard to them as a template.

Plus, you end up spending $50 or more on what is essentially a sheet of plastic...

Why do some people get so tweaked by this? This is supposed to be fun. Lighten up! :D
