Fender bass question?

ok so right now the only bass I have is a douglas 5 string fretless that I got just for the fun of it.

so I wanted to get something a little better so I was going to sell one of my extra guitars and pick up a fender bass.

I will be wanting to upgrade at least the pick-up(s) later if I like the bass, what I wanted to know If I am going to be switching out parts should I spend the little extra cash now to get a MIM fender or just pick up a cheap squire and go to town on it?

also do you like the P-bass or J-basses more?

I do really like the Jazz bass and that is what I might go with but what about rebuilding a squire vs a MIM?
