OK im a bass player first and foremost but i own a really cheap strat copy and i want to try for the bass sound for new orders blue monday as well as the other songs the monstrous peter hook played on his shergold 6 string bass, wondering if i got an octave pedal if i could get that kind of sound on a guitar, thanks

Fender bass vi sound with guitar

I’ve never used one so I don’t really know, but isn’t that what an octave pedal is for? Why wouldn’t it work?
It would probably work OK in a live mix, but I've put my guitars through octave pedals and they sound nothing like my SRC6.
you can play it on 4 string bass. he doesn't even use the b and high e on blue monday. the shergold is 30" scale so the tone is twangier. pick by the bridge.
At risk of sounding too much like a smart a$$, will it sound exactly like a Bass VI? No. Is it a cool effect that definitely has a place and probably a good way to see if you’d like something like a Bass VI? Yes.

Another option if you just have a Strat laying around, look up Fender Sub-Sonic replacement necks. Think they're about 300 clams, maybe less. It's a baritone conversion neck made by Fender for a Strat. Then you can go B-B or A-A and maybe lower.

I'm pretty weak on my effects knowledge, so maybe it can work, but whenever I ran my guitar through an octave-down because I wanted a Bass VI, it sounded like a muffled, distant, kinda fuzzy version of the notes. When I would try a pitch-shifter to turn my guitar into a baritone, it sounded like I was playing music for a 1950s underwater movie scene. Neither one of them sounded anything like the instruments I was trying to emulate.
Maybe there are ways, I couldn't figure it out. By all means, give it a shot [and let me know if it works!] but maybe try it with a demo in-store before buying the pedal; you may find that you're better off keeping that money towards an actual Bass VI.

Anyone ever try stringing a 4 string bass with the bottom 4 strings of a Bass VI set?

The issue with an octave pedal is that the analog versions are monophonic - one note at a time. The more modern digital octave pedals can track chords but they're not perfect and add some artifacts to the tone.
If you're after Peter Hook tones a clone theory will get you a large part of the way there. I agree with hypercarrots that you can use a normal bass and don't need a 6-string/baritone (not quite the same thing, if you look into it further you'll see why).
Hook also states in many place (interviews, autobiography, etc.) that the 4-string Yamaha BB was what he used on pretty much every song in the studio.

It's more accurate to say that a majority of the songs were a 4 string bass, he did use the Shergold quite a bit actually. This is a rough list I shamelessly stole from neworderonline, with a couple minor corrections. There's more songs but this is the bulk of them that used the six string. It's also not counting later bands he was in like Revenge and Monaco that saw use of it there too.
(Granted, you can get away with playing a good chunk of these with a 4 string, though it may be more difficult. That and it sometimes doesn't sound right.)

this is what i built. 30" scale, tuned EADGBE, 100,80,60,50,45,40 gauge. it's been called different things. i don't know if it it's what you mean but it's closer to what peter hook used on blue monday than a fender VI. is that all right?

yes there are certain new order songs you cannot play on a 4 string like elegia, let's go, 1963 but since LeoJB was talking about blue monday that's what i was addressing.
you asked me if i knew that a 6 string bass isn't the same as a bass vi. i gave you an answer with details to be clear because on the internet it's easy to misunderstand. especially concerning 6 string basses because people call them different things. i asked if all of that information was all right, as in are all those specs i listed what you consider a bass vi and for you to discern if i knew a 6 string bass is not the same as a bass vi in the context of this thread and LeoJB's question.
i thought for a while on how to phrase that specifically to avoid sounding defensive because i knew it might come across that way but unfortunately that was the best and simplest way i could write it and unfortunately you were offended by it. i think you had attitude the way you asked if i knew a 6 string bass was different from a bass vi. it's a bass. with 6 strings.
warmoth makes baritone conversion necks too. 28 5/8" is real close to the 30" scale length of a bass vi. looks like they don't have any stock models in but then you could create it to your heart's desire
