Fender Blacktop Club

The switch is more subtle that I thought it would be. Three position?
Thank you! And yes, down is the factory series position, middle activates the north coil of the middle pickup and the south coil of the bridge pickup so that they buck the hum of a normal Jazz bass, and the up position sets each pickup to parallel mode with a slightly tamer, almost glassier sound

Isn't it wired VVT in parallel from the factory? I'm pretty sure mine is...

If it was wired in series from the factory, wouldn't one of the volume knobs be kinda redundant..?

The switch toggles each pickup individually. That is, in both pickups at one time, both coils can be run in series or parallel, or singled out to run in parallel with the opposite pole of the opposite pickup, therefore canceling out the hum that would otherwise affect single coils. Of course, just like with a jazz bass, if you adjust the volume of either pickup, the hum comes back

Got this new late last year and used it as a mod platform. Geezer and DiMarzio rail pups, Hipshot tuners, bridge and string retainer. Audere pre, put into a cheap Chinese control plate, and black neck plate. Refinished the face of the headstock, just rattle can black and clear, and lots of elbow grease-came out pretty nice if I do say so. Did the edges of the pickguard with Sharpie.

All that said, I’m about to pull it all apart and put most of the parts on another project and other basses I have. Just don’t dig the tiny nut width, though at least there’s some meat in back, and the fretwork isn’t great. Might put my Aerodyne neck on it, haven’t got it all fully planned yet.

Actually, I changed strings and re-did the setup yesterday, and ended up just changing the neck pup (Geezer out, into my USA P, and installed a Quarter Pounder, which works well with this bass and the EQ. The rails is not great and likely coming out at some point, I can EQ it to be 'usable' but that's about it. Also, middle blended position is terribly weak in output, I changed the phase on the DiMarzio (reversed + & -), no love.

Raised the action just a wee touch via going heavier strings and not tweaking the rod, and any noisy frets no longer showing up.

After all that beautiful blackness above, here's some lightness.....

I eventually got a VM Jazz 70's to use the body with my fretless neck and put the VM Jazz neck on the Blacktop Jazz. I think it looks pretty good with the pearloid blocks on the pearl white body.

Another project that had input from @Malak the Mad

I shall neither confirm, nor deny, any involvement in such endeavors.

That being said, I will make the assertion that in it's current form, all it would need is a white-pearloid pickguard and it'd be ready to "Viva" something fierce in Las Vegas. ;)

My recent addition of a Blacktop Precision to keep my Blacktop Jazz company. I have wired each pickup with a switch for series / parallel and both pickups together for series / parallel with a push pull tone pot.
Love the P-Bass Special necks...I did the same with mine (except for the one with the Aerodyne Jazz neck). Curious as to why you went dots on the Jazz and blocks on the Precision?

I really wanted to like my Blacktop Jazz with my fretless neck but the bridge pickup tone was just wrong. All pop and tops on the D and G strings and none on the E and A strings. Now, with a normal jazz body i love it.

I guess I'll have to be removed from this club.

That's a shame. :( I'm guessing you tried adjusting the pickup height, ja? Also, do you still have the body? I'm not looking to buy it back, just curious, what with our shared history.
