Fender Blacktop Club

Here's my Blacktop jazz with SD 1/4 pounders, a Fender hi-mass bridge, and a Fender 60's Vintera roasted maple neck! This thing's a BEAST!!

Greetings, All!

Recently, I’ve been gravitating back to my Blacktop Jazz, mainly due to switching necks and giving a set of Fender .100 Pure Nickel strings a go-around. No surprise that I got to wondering what current owners are using for their strings, V/V/T settings, what works/doesn't work, such and so forth.
  1. Previously, I was using a Fender Classic '70s neck and Ernie Ball Cobalt flats. The nickels are a touch brighter, but I am pleasantly surprised they aren't too "over the top" as I thought they might be. It's possible I might switch back to the cobalt flats in the future, but for now, the new strings are working well.
  2. Having all V/V/T controls at 100% is pretty good, but I've been getting a bit more kick and punchiness by keeping the neck at 100% and dialing the bridge and tone to somewhere around 80%. That being said, I'm not in a gigging sitch, so I don't know what settings would be appropriate in a band's mix.
What say All Y'all? :bookworm:

Not sure how to add the link but if someone’s interested, they can search for Fender Blacktop in the bass classifieds. I’m the only one from Arizona selling one here.
Go to your page with the ad. At the top of the browser will be the web page address. Select the whole thing, copy it, and paste it in a post over here.

And if you really want to be snazzy, you can edit your previous post. Select "My Fender Blacktop jazz", click the little link icon at the top of the edit box (the one that looks like three links of chain), and paste the web address. That will turn "My Fender Blacktop jazz" into a hyperlink.

You don't have to do this, of course. But one of my life lessons is that the easier you can make something, the more likely it is to happen. People in this thread are by definition going to be more interested in your ad than the general population in TalkBass. I'm not going to scroll through the classifieds to find a specific bass if I don't have to, and the search function here is... less than user friendly, shall we say. But if all I have to do is click a link, I'll go right there just to check it out. And who knows, maybe I'll get a sudden itch for an impulse buy.

As a matter of fact, I'm having a custom made bass built to exactly a jazz specs. Only I'm going to put Seymors on the neck and fender original on the bridge.

Alright!!! I just got my custom "blacktop inspired" 5 string. So happy with it. Let me know what you guys think.

I've had a Blacktop strat since 2013 and got my P bass about 2.5 years ago. I had a few Blacktop Js on my radar but it always fell through.
Debating on what P pickups to swap out on this.
I am full of questions right now.
  1. You claim you haven't successfully grabbed a Blacktop Jazz, but yet, you have one pictured. Is it yours? Are you looking for another?
  2. Are you referring to the Precision with the Dual-J's or the Jazz with the Double-P's? (Yeah, things get murky when it comes to Blacktop basses. :wacky:)
  3. If you're referring to the Blacktop Jazz, what don't you like with the stock pickups? (Personally, I dig the stock pups, but my tastes are probably somewhat/quite different, so I am very curious. :bookworm:)

I must have to forgot to add I just found one on marketplace. It's virtually NOS. Guy still had the receipt from GC in 2013 in the case.

The Jazz is the 2 P pickup bass. Weird I know, but it goes by the body

The OG pickups of fenders sound boring to me. I have a 90s P foto flame from Japan that has amazing sounding pickups, but most newer fender MIM pups are not my thing.
Truthfully, it's probably just my inner need to get new gear and to mod any I can.
My P blacktop I put a coil tap switch on the middle pickup and a DMT push pull tone. Gives it some cool options.

Thanks for the clarification!

P-pups, of course, have so many flavors to choose from. Personally, I like the “boom + bite” I get from the stock pickups, but like many things in life, these things are suggestive. (Side note; It’s sound is very malleable. It all seems to depend on what type of strings I load it with.)

I’d been wondering how it would sound with Fender Pure Vintage ‘63s installed. Fortunately, I got a great deal on one here on the TB Classifieds to try out on another P/J of mine. I’ll report what I find after a proper shakedown trial.

If anyone is looking for a Blacktop Jazz, I just saw this eBay listing (NOT mine).

It's not the worst price I've seen for a used Blacktop, but only if someone grabbed it on the low end of the auction price...doubly so with that inflated shipping cost. (...and is it terrible of me to want to wave a red pencil all over that write-up? It screams "stream of consciousness with zero regard for grammar and punctuation...cuz 'teh intarwebz'"! :bookworm:)

One thing for sure, either the direct sunlight is doing no favors to the fretboard or it's in serious need of an oiling. It looks like pau ferro in those shots. (...not that I have a problem with pau ferro, but that rosewood looks quite pale and dried out.)
