Fender Blacktop Club

I don't remember those having a maple neck though.. is this original?
Nah, that's a 2017 neck, which explains the seller's confusion.

I do miss mine, i actually reaches out to the guy i sold mine 10 years ago, his son played it for many years and sold it so no way to get it back
Very tempting. If it was black, I'd buy it. Luckily this color is not for me.
Geez! Now, I'm almost afraid to even throw out a feeler on mine!

Are all the MIM Blacktop Js super slim necks? I'm looking at a silver one. Mint condition. Guy wants $600 though. Seems way steep for a used MIM. Never had a double P but like the concept.
I guess that depends on what you consider "super slim". They're definitely thicker than the MIM and MIJ Geddy Jazzes, the latter of which I consider one of the slimmest.

I could be proven wrong, but I'm pretty sure the Blacktop basses were built along the same physical specs as the Mexican-made, 2011-2013 Fender Standard basses of the time. The only differences seemed to be the pickups, Deluxe Hi-Mass bridges and the White Chrome Pearl finish. If so, and if you can get your hands on one a Fender Standard of that era, it should probably match up.

As for the price, it doesn't sound too bad...at least, to me. I did an inflation calculation recently and the adjusted brand-new price would be about $700. Nowadays, some people try to crank their prices up even higher, as if they were so rare (which they kinda are) and they were so popular (which they weren't, 'cuz if they were, they'd still be in production).

I wanted to let the Blacktop Club members know before I posted any ads on the TB Classifieds, but it looks like I'll have to say goodbye to my black-finished Blacktop Jazz. :crying: Full disclosure; I sold the original neck a very long time ago. Right now, it's currently paired with a 2013 Squier Vintage Modified '70s neck with Hipshot Licensed Ultralite tuners and a USA Ultralite Drop-D tuner. (Current weight; 9lb 5oz, but I should have the original Fender/Squier tuners lurking around my workshop. If so, and if someone requests it, they can always go back on.)

Whether it sells as a whole or as a parted-out body, I'm also going to include the three, extra pickguards I have in my collection; a standard black/white/black one, a black/white/black one that someone buffed out to a matte finish and a black/blue/black guard. Both the blue and red guards had the edge dyed by myself, then sealed up with brush-on Krazy Glue, so the new color is well protected.

If any/all of this catches someone's eye before I post an ad, hit me up with whatever questions y'all can think of.

Just got this guy off Reverb, tastefully modded BT Jazz. I’m in love. View attachment 7282632
Blameless and nice score!

While I'm very much in love with B-Axis Jazz pickups, I've never had a chance to sample their P-pups. I would love to do an A-B test comparing and contrasting my stock Blacktop pickups to your dual B-Axis array.

Just out of curiosity, do you know what kind of strings yours is armed with? I've tried several different ones to strike the right balance between the lows and highs. I think I've found that balance with the stock pickups, so I'm also wondering if the new pups will alter that "sonic alchemy". 🤔

How much for just the body? and with the neck?
I'm thinking $350 and $550 plus shipping, respectively.

The body is in excellent shape, all stock, no cracks or chips with only minor scratches on the front and back. You can kinda-sorta see the one on the back. The tiny ones on the front/upper-horn are hard to see in a photograph.

All the pickguards pictured along with it. (Once it's gone, I won't have any need for them, anymore...so, what the hell!)

The neck is an excellent Squier Vintage Modified '70s with a mild amber tint to the gloss. At this moment, it's armed with Hipshot licensed Ultralites and a U.S. Ultralite Drop-D tuner. However, I could put the original tuners back on and kick the price down to $500 plus shipping.

Given how well the Fender Pure Nickel strings work with it, I'd throw them in, too...neck or no neck. All that, and I could also include a case for added protection.

No idea what strings these are!

If someone in the club is interested, I've decided to part-out my Blacktop Jazz, if needs be.

It's probably no surprise to everyone in this club, but I miss the aggressive sounds I got out of my Blacktop Jazz. However, I'm working on another Projekt bass that needs a pair of soapbar pickups…specifically, EMG35, Bartolini M3 or Bartolini BB sized bars. Does anyone here know of any soapbars that can replicate the stock Blacktop Precision pups?

Would anyone be able to compare the Blacktop Precision to the G&L JB-2?

Both are quite similar in design but would love to hear some thoughts on how they compare in real life.
If memory serves correct, the BT-P used the same pickups as the Fender Modern Player Jazzes made around the same time. If that is indeed the case, there might be some demos on da ‘Tube.

I’ll take a stab at it, with a caveat of I currently own a G&L SB-2 Tribute, not a JB-2, and I have had 2 Blacktop Precisions over time, but have sold both of them.

It would be good to know what specifically you are looking for comparison: tone, neck feel, build quality, etc. , as well as if you are asking about a USA or Tribute G&L. Can you outline what you are looking for in the comparison?

Generally, there is more that is different about the Blacktop than my G&L than the same, with the only “similarity” being the tone from the pickups of each are very aggressive. I would describe both as “punch you in the face” if you want them too.

Beyond that, the neck shape/size/finish are very different, as well as the overall construction. IMO, I think the G&L is a better instrument overall. As I said, I still have the G&L, and not the Blacktops, FWIW.

As for the JB-2, it is intended to be a Jazz bass (2 single coil pickups, vs the humbuckers on the Blacktop P) with a more compact-Precision style body. So tone-wise that will be the major difference, and build wise, slightly smaller and potentially lighter.

Hope that helps.

Looking back at my non-editable question, I spotted a considerable error. To be more specific, I'm looking for something that lands close to the aggressive tones of the split-coil pickups found in a Blacktop Jazz. Apologies for the backwards phrasing!

It says a lot when Blacktop owners are getting rid of there basses for no real reason. I think I'm best off with a G&L.
