Fender Boxer MIJ pickups

Looking for suggestions on pickups for this bass.

I’d like to keep with the 80s, Made in Japan theme of this bass. Gotoh hardware throughout. I replaced the stock bridge with a higher mass Gotoh 201B recently.

So all that said, what pickups would you look at installing to keep with the theme and also upgrade the stock pickups?

Di Marzio Model J were one of the first & still one of the best sounding after market j pickups available & were around during the time of your bass’s production , so period correct in a sense if that’s part of your goal.

I have a set in a fretless j with a John East retro j preamp strung with GHS tapewounds & it sounds superb. Super quiet & punchy.

Why Dimarzio @Slater ?

Just curious.

The Dimarzio Model P and J pickups were probably the most popular aftermarket bass pickups in the ‘80s. Also, a lot of instruments came stock with Schaller copies of the Dimarzios in the 80s.

If you want 80s, Dimarzio is a great way to go.
