Yup I enjoy the tone of this bass. The neck on mine does require frequent truss rod adjustments. But the tone is worth it. I carried this and an American Jazz Bass to a gig Friday night. The Jazz was playing better but the tone of the California Series was just perfect for the band I was playing with.

Hello.
I refloat this post. I just got an original '98 California passive series.
It really is a great bass. The precision sound is really very good and the combination with jazz is very interesting too. The jazz pickup sounds great on its own as well, but gets strong when supported by the precision.
Its quality of termination is very good and its aesthetics is great simple.
Its weight is quite moderate and its comfort on its intermediate neck bridge between jazz and precision, with a low action, makes it very pleasant to play. I received it a few days ago and now it is at the luthier for adjustment and tuning. You could see the lack of use despite being quite careful and calibrated.
Now with new strings and some adjustments I think it's going to sound really amazing !!!

I've had mine since I bought it new. There was a love/hate relationship with it for the longest time, but now I've decided I mostly love it. I do however think of changing out the pick-ups. I don't know what the stock originals are, but I'm looking for a much darker sound. I currently play it with flats and the P pick-up with the tone all the way down. Should I consider the DiMarzio "Relentless" pick-up, or leave it stock and tweak the amp more? (I had a Mesa Walkabout 15, but now I use an Acoustic Image DoubleShot for the weight difference!)

My other primary bass is a Hagstrom Viking. Love the tones, but I like the J neck better.

Lazarus thread!
One of these has come up for £800 in UK. Is it worth it?
I'm a P guy and I've sold every Jazz I've ever had but feel like getting one again. This might scratch that itch but I could get a newer US bass for the same money...
What’d you decide on the California?? I have one I’m getting a great deal on this week. Needs some cleanup, but I’m looking forward to it.

Hi all, I’m looking at buying this bass but don’t know much about this model, does it look legit please? Did this model come with the black headstock & neck?

It’s a Fender PJ Bass California Series.

Any help would be appreciated! 🎸👍🏽
