Fender - Cracked Finish

Hello All!

I am looking at purchasing a 2005 American Standard Precision. It is in mint condition, except for finish cracks at the top horns. I haven't seen this before. Has anyone ever seen finish cracks down to the wood? Should I run away from this due to dryness of the wood, etc.? Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures. Thanks!

That bass is most likely coated with polyurethane which is quite durable under normal conditions. It's possible the instrument was stored in an environment where temperatures and more importantly humidity fluctuated wildly causing the wood to expand and contract rapidly enough to create the cracks. You may see warping in the neck as well if you look closely. Used American Standard basses are plentiful so you may wish to walk away from this one.

I bought a minty Lakland from a guy here on TB and it arrived with a few finish cracks that originated at overtightened hardware screws. One of them actually happened in transit.

Are the cracks from screws?

Thank you both for the reply's! They aren't stress cracks from screws, they are on the top of the bass if held vertically. Good point about the neck! I'm going to walk away from this one!
