Well, I'm still in this club, but my qualifications have changed. I traded this-

Somewhere on this forum is a quote from me saying that I've tried these Proto P Basses and just didn't like them. Well, I guess I changed my mind, because this thing is awesome! I know that a lot of you think that it's a glorified Cabronita, which is a great bass anyway, but this has quite a different tone and feel (I have owned a Cab as well). It's the best neck I've ever played on, the RSD bridge is a great design, and the TV Jones thunderblade roars! The finish on this one seems to be a "one-off" as Fender's standard colors for these guys were Black, Alpine White, Faded Burst, and a smaller run of Shorline Gold and Aged LPB. Dave's Guitar Shop had a couple other colors including this Vintage White and a Sonic Blue that was pretty tempting. Dave's is selling these at a great price right now if anyone is interested.
By the way, I will NOT be putting a tort guard on this one...

The nomenclature is defo incorrect on that bass, given the contours; can't imagine why they'd name it a '51. But Fender is known for dicking around not just with names but designs. Here's my 1990 Custom Shop '62 Jazz. They were never offered as fretless or without a 'plate in '60-'62. Also, if this had to be period-correct it would have the mute holes present. The grounding strap was also not present but added, much later, by myself.

Well, after a few people here pointed out that my guitar didn't look like a '51 (something I'm sure I'd never have noticed on my own), I decided to call Fender! After explaining that the model year on the CoA seemed to conflict with the neck and pickup year listed in the specs, he looked it up in their system. At first he thought it might just be some kind of hybrid custom, but after looking it up we seemed to share the same level of confusion. He ended up sending me a copy of the "Custom Shop Floor Traveler" which indicates, in fact, the neck, pickup, AND body are all that of a '55. So it's likely a typo on the CoA or there's something unknown or magical about it that somehow makes it a '51. In the end, I really don't care...it's bee-YOO-tiff-all! :D

New CS bass in the house!
Bought this from Switzerland through eBay and it's the exact bass I've been looking for!

I had a 1960 CS jazz relic that was beautiful (photos in this thread I think) but it just wasn't my thing. My thing is a good early 60's P in a custom color. Surf Green ,ofcourse! And this one is a NOS finish so it'll just get better.

Mint green pickguard is on the way but it's not bad as is.

CoA says '62 precision bass but I feel it's more like the '59 CS p-bass with a rosewood board.

Whatever...it's a keeper!

NICE Bass you have there!!! My Sonic Blue P looked as nice as yours at one time.. It may look like this one in a few years. :)This Alleva Coppolo has been around the US and planet earth a few times.. Never been to Antarctica though.
Tried the Tort Guard and BA last year but recently put it back to all stock.. I need to take newer photos. The white PG was from 3 years ago before i tried the Tort guard

Wow. The quarter sawn grain on that neck is the widest I've seen on an FCS bass. Looks awesome.

Congrats on that beauty! We need more pics! :laugh: Nice, you will relic it your own way - I do that slowly on my CS '64 NOS.
Indeed, that's a "wide-grain" quartersawn neck!
