Quick question for you P Bass players. I gigged my 55 P (single coil) for the first time tonight and it sounded awesome. One thing I noticed though is that it has (much) lower output than my split-coil P. Not a big deal, I just cranked up the gain on my amp. But, just wondering if raising the pickup would help? Would that impact the tone?

There is a document somewhere on Fender's site that will tell you what the measurement should be. Given that it's a CS, I doubt it's very far off. Getting the adjustment wrong, from what I've read, like too close, will give you tone and other problems. I think the single coil is probably lower volume than the humbucker anyway. Others probably know a lot more than me.

That's what I thought as well. The tone was the best I've ever had - just wish there was more output. Though it sounded sweet through my V4B, I was wishing I'd have brought my Super Bassman (or an SVT). To be fair, this was a loud gig in a crappy sounding room, so under different conditions would have been spot on probably. That tone, though!

I had seen the desert black it in a guitar center way up on a wall for years, it was overpriced bad and then Friday the put it on an ultra clearance, so I had to scoop it up. Which makes me think more and more guitar center is in trouble. I've noticed the gear in all four South Florida locations I go in here and there all have not gotten any new merchandise and are all clearing the big ticket items out,especially fender.

Raise it. However getting it too close to the E string can result is some cloudier than normal low notes and string clack. FWIW, I have an actual 1955. I gigged it for years until the pickup shorted out and its output dropped to nearly zero. As part of the restoration, Lindy Frailin himself rewound it on the original bobbin with the original magnets. The resulting output was actually quite high, though probably not as much as a split-coil P.

BTW, I am the owner of a CS early 60's Jazz relic. It is a "duo-tone," i.e., the body is a central plank of Alder and the "wings" are Ash, IIRC. Love this instrument—as does everyone who I work with when using it. It is my #1 passive fretted 4-string these days.

I have some friends at Fender, so I got the skinny on this bass. It was made in early 2009 with a small batch of CS instruments for West LA Musics 40 year anniversary. It's a complete one off. Not another exactly like it

I have a fender FSR telecaster that matches this perfectly aside from the pickguard. But from the pics it almost looks daphne blue
