Fender custom shop

It hard for me to justify new prices, I just couldnt do that with any bass because you sell it then you take a big hit and I am not rich by any means. Then when a bass is a relic already its like you may as well get a used one. I dig custom shops, I had a '58 CS P and I really regret selling that one. If I were to buy a new Fender 63 AV P bass those are like $2000 new, and you can Find CS basses for 2k used and in the same condition they came new, takes a little looking but you can do it and for that price there really good basses. I have a CS J in the classifieds I thought I wouldnt ever sell but my car hit 265k the other day and its not doing to well, its walk or keep the bass and I have been considering walking. Definitely find a local one to check out.

I have really enjoy playing my CS 64 Jazz. It has a great broken in feel, and I love the tone. The only complaint I have is that it make me nervous taking it to play out. But that could be said about any expensive bass. Here's a little bass porn.

Is that Fiesta red? Sweet looking bass though.
Yes it is. I know I should not be too attached to any material object, but this is the most complete, awesome sounding Cunetto Era, Fender CS I have seen or played. If it were to disappear, I would still live a fantastic life with plenty of great playing basses, but I would not have my dear 64 RI Jazz. Can you blame me?

It would also cost me a small fortune and massive wait time to replace this with a John Cruz Master built, which this essential is. Actually, I don't think John Cruz is even taking any more orders at this time until he can complete his current back orders.

If you don't get a relic finish and compare them to US made "boutique" fenders, they are definitely worth it.
They sound really good and play really well.

But if you do get a relic finish, they are even MORE worth it! YMMV, IMHO, YKMD, etc. (YKMD = Your Kool-aid May Differ)

I just bought a used CS '60 Relic J Bass, and it's great. The neck is far better, stability-wise, than what I had on my '62 reissue (which sounded really good). Interestingly. I had been looking for a nice Mike Lull or Lakland, which are so hard to find in NY that I only got to try some when I was visiting Chicago. And -- to my surprise -- I preferred the Fenders over the one Lull and Lakland I was able to get my hands on. A small sample, I know, so it doesn't mean much. But the Fenders all felt livelier. I'd still like to get a nice Lull or Lakland one of these days, but for the classic alder/rosewood tone, I'm totally happy with the Fender.

As the owner of the bass in the Original Post (and 3 more CS basses), I can attest that they are not cheap, but you may find some crazy great basses from the CS, crazy enough to justify the price tag. I've had many Sadowsky, Lull and Lakland basses, but I must admit that the best tones I've had are from Custom Shop basses... Not all, but most of them.

That particular HLE gold P I have for sale on eBay and here in the classifieds is an awesome bass, but I'm just not into the RELIC finish. I bought it to 'try' and see how I would feel with a relic in my hands, but it's just not for me... If it has been a NOS, I would NEVER sell this bass.

OP, feel free to message me if you want to talk.

The Jade Pearl at the far right is a 2012 AM STD though, but it's a REAL nice one... The BEST non-CS bass I've ever had. But I would say it's like 1 out of 50...

Still not exactly on par with the CS you see in this pic. The CS are more even, the pitch is closer to perfection, etc...

I've picked up a few and was utterly underwhelmed. Nice - but not "Wow, this is *nice*" kinda nice. I pick up a Sadowsky or a Fodera and get that "WOW" thing. FCS? Nope.
I think that they really are for guys with a bit too much money who want something that might be collectible.

I agree. I played two in a local shop and both were no better in tone or feel than the American standards. I was ready to work out a deal with the shop and my all original 73" tele I had offered in trade.
The shop was drooling over the tele since the CS was hanging there a while. The fit and finish did not even impress me so I took the tele home.
