I'm not really concerned with whether it's morally right or wrong. People can do whatever they want to their own instrument, but at the end of the day to me it's just sad. If I purchase a Squier bass that I end up enjoying enough to play a gig with, why would I feel the need to cater to the people who are gonna try to tell me I'm not "supposed" to enjoy a Squier since I'm not a beginner?

Fender Decals On Non-Fender Basses

A $49 casio does keep better time than a Rolex. Quartz watches do keep better time than mechanicals. That said, I do get your point, and agree with you otherwise.
Now, then what about modding my Submariner to look like a G-Shock?

The logos are easily available. I am sure somewhere down the line someone will have the idea to pass his franken bass off as a Fender. It's a shame and some unsuspecting creature is gonna be duped. Well you know what they say Karma is gonna knock ya right in your place. What goes around comes around it happens all the time.
Anyone that buys anything should beware anyway. Check everything on it...there is WAY more to a legit bass than just the "Fender" headstock. It isn't difficult.
This happens often enough. Although not a Fender, I had a set-to with a local shopkeeper about a Ric 4001 copy he was trying to pass off as genuine. Whether he was defrauded himself or he was attempting to defraud (or both) wasn't quite clear, but the bass was a certainly a fake, and being sold as the real deal.
There's one chinese website that sells "Fenders" that don't even look much like the real deal bodywise, but they have the correct logo on them.
As for the decal topic at hand - I bet this rages on for another few hundred posts without a resolution.
For my personal view on the decal thing: I wouldn't do it.

Hey, yeah-what about Fenderbirds? Should anybody doing a Fenderbird build (and using a used Fender neck) sand the Fender logo off the headstock?
Absolutely! Because the owner is obviously trying to make it look like a Fender CustomShop project or even a very rare prototype that was never put into production.

There's nothing wrong with playing a Squier. Which makes it even more sad when a Squier owner feels so self conscious about his image that he feels compelled to disguise that instrument as something else.
Bruce Foxton's (of the Jam) original "Rickenbacker" was a MIJ copy, like most people in the UK at the time who could not possibly afford a real one on a working man's wage, he replaced the truss rod cover. He did get a real one later of course, but his old one - and many others are still out there.
I just put together a "p" copy out of parts found on eBay. Maybe the body is a Fender, maybe not (according to the seller, it was). The neck is a Mighty Mite.

Speaking for myself, I'm not mad at Squier owners. I'm saddened by those who feel so ashamed of the instrument they play that they feel compelled to go to great lengths to disguise it as something else. I'm bemused by those who claim they "don't care", but still go through the trouble to pull off this charade. And I'm incredulous of those who claim they'll "never sell", or will be "straightforward" with those who buy their fraudulent instrument.
Agreed, I don't get it. I have two Squiers I would be quite happy to play-out with without trying to pass them off as something they're not. And If anyone has the nerve to come up and give me grief for it, I will attempt to politely educate them on the facts. If they still don't get it, there's not much else I can do but to then tell them "Sorry, but if you're going to persist in being a gear snob, then there's no point in me talking to you any further."
What anyone else thinks of the gear I use is nowhere near as important to me as what I think of it.
I bought a P-Bass neck over the internet. A Fender certified tech told me it was a MIJ Fender neck. I put the neck on a Fender MIM body and added an "Original 62" pickup. I put the Fender decal on it because it IS a Fender.
^^This tactic is known as "obfuscation".
The issue isn't about putting genuine Fender necks on bodies made by competitors, so the countless tens of thousands of Fenderbird owners can rest easy. It's about putting a name brand on a no-name product with the specific intent of passing it off as a more expensive/desirable item.
Without getting into it....it might be b/c people like you call their basses POS's (you have done that a few times in this thread)...just calling it as I see in this thread.
I will agree with you that people should be completely straightforward if/when selling the bass that has been 'tagged'....it is only fraudulent if you are trying to sell it as legit or with any misrepresentation...imo.
There are Fender decals on eBay fyi for all of the Fender police.
