These are on sale at GC through 05/11 for $749.99. They went up from $799 to $899 at the beginng the year. I bought one last year and love it. P body, j neck, beautiful finish with flexible tone. Just thought I'd give a heads up in case somebody is thinking about getting one...

Played one a few weeks ago and it was a nice bass. I think with the MIM if you get the FSR models or artist models they are a step up from the standards. The neck on this one is very similar to my MIJ Geddy neck which I like a lot.

How the heck could you forget that?

I've been GASsing for this bass since I laid eyes on it a couple months ago, but I just bought a T-Bird at the end of January (which I haven't forgotten about :smug:) and can't justify another bass purchase just yet.

Wish they were MIJ still....slightly better build quality in my opinion,.....so I built my own Fender PJ but in sunburst w/ black pg and Geddy style jazz neck w/blocks......LOVE it...
But that is a good deal if setup correctly.

It is a great Bass!! My buddy Chase just got one and I played it last weekend. Only weird thing was to me the back of the neck felt very flat compared to my Bass (Squier Troy Sanders Jag) like it was a big difference. But what a sweet looking and sounding Bass. I like the black binding on its neck too. $750 is a steal for it new IMO especially after the price hikes.

Minority opinion: I bought one of these from Guitar Center, and kept it a little too long to return it. I wanted to like it, but I could not get with the heavy poly finish on the neck. Probably because I'd had a late '90s California Series P/J with a one-piece maple, no binding, no gloss, it felt really great under the fingers.

My neck is as smooth as satin. Did they change them?

Another minority opinion:

I went into the nearest GC that had one a few months ago to give it a test drive with intent to buy. The neck felt good but the glossy finished looked cheap and tacky, it didn't feel particularly solid, and the bridge pup was weak. I thought maybe it was me, another guy was sitting there who know how to play so I gave it to him and asked him to play it and tell me what he thought of the bridge pup. He played it for a while and said it sounded weak to him.

I didn't buy - seemed like a $450 bass painted up to pad the price. At the time it was a GC special model, I don't trust GC.

YMMV.

I didn't mention the bridge pickup, because I never solo it or dime it. I've gotten good results giving it a bit of blend to give some bite; but it will never be a jazz tone. I consider this bass to be a P bass, with the ability to add some articulation. By no means is it a ONE BASS DOES ALL.

That being said, it is my favorite P bass. I generally play with the bridge pickup zeroed and might add a bit for some D and G bite.
