Fender Duff McKagan model pickup issues

My above mentioned bass is having an issue with the pickups. It is a P/J type bass, and it's the P bass pickups that are the issue. They crackle when I play. I didn't notice this until I did a series of outdoor shows 2 years ago during Halloween season at a haunted house. I know it's not the height of the pickup because i had it low, then raised it, and it did it in both positions. Could the pickup have gone bad from moisture getting in it?

I decided to take the p bass pickups out and shield them with copper tape, and that stopped the noise.

The J PU may not be a humbucker, unlike the P.

Shielding the PU will certainly help, but I would replace it with a humbucker type eg a stack PU.

I went further and shielded the P coils as well, and all live internal wiring coaxially shielded as well.

The difference was noticeable for FOH/recording.
I could hear it on headphones.

Most passive basses benefit from this, as their output is relatively low, and this improves the signal/noise ratio.
