Fender enters the home studio market

I felt informed enough to move on from the software but perhaps I missed something.
That's all that matters. I've said repeatedly in professional circles that the only reason to choose one DAW over another is its workflow. Anything beyond workflow differences (i.e. included plugins, loops, samples, etc.) can be found from a third party developer if it's not included in the DAW itself. Find the one you gel with most naturally and use it. Fender's DAW will have its own workflow just like all the others. Some will like it, some will dislike it. I'm guessing if it's built on Studio One's code it will likely be very possible to configure it to behave much the same as Studio One does right now, but only time will tell.

That's a classier way of putting things. Thank you and my apologies for the negative tone. I love Ableton and Reason for many things but always throw it in Logic because of my workflow preferences and needs (which are not professional). At the end of the day if Fender gets more people into recording it's a win.

Agreed. I suspect that's their aim. Professional studios are dying and the market is shifting (or has already shifted) to home recording as the more viable business model. You can't really blame Fender for apparently focusing on the more lucrative demographic. That's all assuming that the speculation regarding Fender's DAW prove to be accurate.

Check out the Presonus home page as of today. Yes, looks like all the recording products will get rebranded Fender eventually, as Klangfarbe showed in his post.

Good points. My whole overarching gripe is that it would have been nice for Fender to have preserved StudioOne as the 'professional' DAW for X demographic (myself and plenty of others), and to have done whatever they've done with 'Fender Studio' to appeal to Y demographic.

That would have been nice for existing Studio One owners for sure, but from Fender's perspective it's then two DAWs to keep up to date with modern OS changes, bug fixes, patches, etc. You'd be hard pressed to find that approach from any large corporation.

As an alternative, have you tried any of the Studio One skins and templates for Reaper? It certainly wouldn't be 1:1, but it's a surprisingly flexible platform that's capable of a lot. It could be worth a look when you get to the point of needing to update beyond the last available version of Studio One, assuming you end up not liking the Fender DAW.

While that may be true, many DAW vendors sell multiple versions where you get more stuff if you pay more.

Ableton Live, Cubase, Digital Performer, Pro Tools, FL Studio, Akai MPC and even Studio One (will the free version be gone now?) all have tiers. The highest tier gives you everything, the lower tiers simple leave things out. So it's not too hard to managebug fixes and updates.

I'm not moving to Reaper. I already have the highest possible standalone (non-subscription) version of StudioOne Pro, and operate in its own native world in terms of software and hardware. It's always kind of flippant to just say 'change DAWs' when your entire setup is in one world. There's a reason why studios who adopted ProTools early on have stayed with it. It's a pain to completely upend your world.

As Brian Rost pointed out, multiple entities manage multiple versions of DAWs all the time. It wouldn't have been a stretch to preserve StudioOne as its own thing.

hey. a S1 user since 3.3, used Reaper before.

since PreSonus to Fender deal I didn't update my S1 and still running on v5. as far as I can say, some bugs, I reported back in v3 are still not fixed in v8.

I'm more concerned not of the ownership, but of a new release cycle. earlier there was 2-3 years to stabilize the major version before releasing a new one. after .3-.4 the new one was actually usable (i.e. better than the old major version with no big regressions), .5 is was rock solid and .6 (usually released after the next major release) was even nicer.

now they have finally broken it: the 7 is 7.2 now and not all regressions from v7 are fixed, as users on the forums say. and they already release v8 with a lot much things broken. it's kinda understandable, as it's a 8.0, but the point is we reached 8.0 before we made a good v7, and likely this practice will continue with future releases.

so, I'm really concerned about S1 becoming more and more buggy in future. I'm used it's not getting less buggy, but more!

frankly I'm on the verge of changing a DAW for several years yet. I've used Reaper and Cubase, but didn't record anything in Logic. I'm seeing a lot of Logic users in this thread, so may I ask you all:
1. are you generally satisfied with the stability nowadays? speed/latency?
2. are some of you still running it in Rosetta (I'll need to due to Melodyne)? is it much worse that native?

FYI, according to Joe Gilder (who is a Presonus/Fender contractor), the entire Presonus software team was retained back in 2021 after the Fender merger and are the same team who developed Fender Studio Pro 8.

And the question now is.... will they continue to be retained now that Fender has what it wants from PreSonus. Hopefully they do, for their sakes.

I went from StudioOne V5 to the latest iteration of V7 and don't notice many 'bugs' at all. Maybe I'm just not using the 'buggy' features.

Which ones do you encounter? For me, S1 has been rock solid stable. The only quirks I encounter from time to time involve plugins that sometimes don't load properly, but that's a rarity, and usually only when I'm switching among multiple projects repeatedly to tweak things.

well, my personal pet peeve remains an inability to create a not buggy macro to duplicate a track, mute and un-arm the original, record-arm and unmute the new one. 'not buggy': reliably working, like similar one in Cubase or Reaper. it works, but if the track in question is last, not really. if the track in question is last in folder -- it also makes a mess out of your mix, record-arming and muting many unrelated tracks with no undo. there's a certain race condition that just breaks it from working properly, PreSonus support acknowledged that it's 100% reproducible, but it never was to get fixed over the long years.

or you were talking about new S1 regressions? take a look at S1 forum, the 7.2.3 thread mentions a Melodyne regression (absent in 7.2.2) and no fix to v7 since October.

Cool. I don't use macros regularly, so I might not have encountered that one. Also don't use Melodyne... so as I assumed, I simply don't use those features to have encountered those bugs. There will always be something.... as ProTools users also know. Whether they are deal-breakers is up to the user to decide.

I just upgraded from Presonus Studio One Pro 7.x to Fender Studio Pro 8

for free!

i love it

the guitar and bass amp sims are excellent.

39 guitar amps, 18 bass amps, and 125 pedal effects.

workflow improvements are great.

lots of complaining about the Fender branding.

i think it's a solid version 8 upgrade and rebranding.

the Presonus team is intact from what i hear.

BRILLIANT move by Fender.

What has 'improved' with the workflow?

There is no complaining - just legit discussion.

'I think' isn't confirmation of improvement one way or another. It's like laundry detergent saying 'new and improved! or 'now with 10% more free!' What's new? What's improved? '10% more' of what?

It's a move.... whether it's 'brilliant' depends on how they continue to support existing legacy StudioOne users with cross/backward compatibility.

Glad you're enjoying it?

1. Yes, although some older third party VSTs I own and still like to use for specific tasks have a tendency to crash Logic. Upgrading to current versions of these instruments would solve the issue as none of my modern instruments cause this problem.

2. I'm still running an Intel Mac, so no Rosetta mode for me. On an Intel Mac I can use Melodyne in ARA mode, as well as other ARA plugins without issue.

For my needs the only problem I have with Logic is a long-known bug that Apple hasn't fixed for years despite having been told about it endlessly by users. Essentially, some third party plugins have an issue with plugin delay compensation reporting for automation values. As a result you have to draw automation curves ahead or behind where they actually need to happen. Apple's comment has been that the problem is with the third party reporting, but these plugins work fine in other DAWs, so I find that hard to believe. It's a manageable problem that's not a deal breaker for me, but I'd like to see it fixed.

Given that it's £169 for a perpetual licence but that only covers one version with an apparent cadence of once per year (as far as I can tell, although I'm not sure) then it's barely better than a subscription.

What I find more problematic, though, is a lack of a trial. I've tried Studio One and was lukewarm about it. Allegedly it is more stable than Reaper, although I've never really had an issue with Reaper. But am I prepared to spend £169 on a new, unknown product without a trial? No.

The Studio One version 7 trial version is now gone. It links to Invalid Link Removed which says "Page not found."

I meant complaining on the net, not here.

The pearl clutching is over the top.

One obvious improvement is audio to midi note/gm drums wihout melodyne.

As i mentioned, the fender guitar and bass amp sims are great.

The channel insert overview is very nice.

Full studio 7 pro functionality remains, from what i can tell so far.

I'm sure there is a list.

I am enjoying it, yes.

And again, i got it for free.

I remember when windows replaced DOS (yes, i'm ancient).

Or when Autocad killed the drafting board and 3D CAD killed Autocad.

The crying is the same.
