Actually just found this 1978 bass online @ Invalid Link Removed that is the finish I had; still no definitive name, but this is definitely the color of the bass.

Fender factory colors in 1978

Lowbrow got it 1st, it's just called "wine". It was offered from ~ late '75 till the early '80s. It is definitely not the same as walnut. I don't have any late '70s Fender color charts (not really into that era personally), but even the VGPG lists walnut and wine separately, and starting in different years, and offered simultaneously..
BTW, "wine" is considered a custom color, while "walnut" is considered an option of "natural". So wine commands ~25-30% more $$. That is if the guy who's selling it knows the difference, lol.
Lets hope whoever stole mine back in '82 knows that. But International colors- hated 'em then, would grab An orange or yellow one in a heartbeat now!

78 is a couple of years before my time but I go with "wine" as well. Definately not walnut by the pics.....and Midnite Wine started after 85 on imports as I recall.

Don't know if this will help or just confuse matters more, but I found this site after a quick Google search. I don't know how authoritative it is, but it does seem to be pretty comprehensive. If you click on "Red" in the left pane, it doesn't show "Wine" as a color, but it does show "Midnight Wine", which someone mentioned as a possible a little farther up the thread. Unfortunately, my eyes are even worse than my ears these days, so I'm can't tell how close a match it is to the OP's pic. But it looks pretty good. I just wish they provided the years all the different colors are/were available, but I didn't see that anywhere, or maybe I missed it.

I've owned a late 70's Strat with the same color scheme. I can't remember what research I dug up on it (it was over a year ago).

I have a 2012 hand-stained Wine Red Jazz (FSR). Yours looks a bit more brown. Granted, mine is a 2012 and yours is old.
Have you tried calling Fender's Customer Service? They might be able to tell you.

It's clearly an ash body with a walnut stain. Unmistakable, very brown color. The other basses have too much red to be walnut. I could believe that the walnut stain aged differently, were it not for the fact that that color is prevalent across the entire product line.
All colors are possibe. At least until I see a 70's color chart. Which I'm amazed no one seems to have. Given that no one has a 70' color chart, what makes you certain that color you linked is wine?
It's not possible that these are the same color. A major difference in hue like this would be a first. Fender was careless in the 70's, but not that careless.
