Well I'm not as hungry for now 
- but I think I'll be on the look for a period correct white one (or if one of your basses dies, let me know!). After all, I have it for playing and not for investment purposes...
As for the sprayons - my fiesta certainly doesn't have 'burst underneath it. I think the practice of overspraying emerged in the 60ies, when custom colors where just that and made to order. Also, there are oversprayed vintage strats from the UK (because in the 60s, Hank Marvin played a red strat so the importer oversprayed the bursts) - so that adds to the urban legend.
As for the fullertons, the custom colors are not that custom (as I've only seen olympic white, black and fiesta - not exactly a broad choice).

Egads. That's awful. How did it happen? Please tell me it was some horrible accident (it was hit by a meteor or an escaped circus elephant broke in and sat on it or something like that), and not from playing or just hagning on the wall or something. What a bummer.

I had a 1983 CAR stack-knob like this.
Traded it for a 1985 CAR 62 P-bass.
Here's some pics of the '62 RI I picked up up a couple of weeks back. Neck date is 12th March '83. It's very clean, only a couple of small marks over the whole bass, and not much play wear at all, frets almost like new. By the looks of it, it has spent most of it's life under someones bed. Plays like a dream and has tone in spades. It came fitted with steel rounds, but I will be putting some La Bella flats on it as soon as they arrive in the post. Ordinary pics=ordinary camera...sorry about that.

Nice bass! For a 62 RI, it looks weird though, only one pickup and two pots... almost like a p-bass

Do you still have the 85? I know they made reissue during that time but you never see any. 85 and 86 reissues are about as rare as they come and most would be made from Fullerton parts.

This was taken in the summer of 1983, when I'd had the bass for only a few months. That's a Music Man HD-130 there, BTW.
And this one shows what happens when you play the same bass for every gig, rehearsal, and lesson you teach for about 15 years....
I bought the bass in April 1983. It was from the first batch of VS instruments Fender shipped to our store. And all the Fender dealers I had contact with got a bunch of new Vintage Series stuff the same week. Before April 1983, other than the VS '52 Telecaster guitar, it appears that only a very very few dealers got any VS stock until spring of '83.

My friend was a Fender dealer then.
And the guitars came first to his shop.
Hs first three VS basses were, a sunburst 57 P, and Black 62 P, and a LPB stack knob 62 J.
This was April 1983.
When I arrived at the store to see basses.
Someone, was buying the LPB 62 Jazz.
I played both P-Basses, there were both great, but I bought the Black 1982 P-bass.
That was my main bass for the next 9 years, till it was stolen.
I have never seen another black 62 VR P, in person since.
The early one, 1982-1985, are as good as any Fender I've every played.

Re: CAR - yes. I cannot speak to the case, other than it looks suitably old enough, and it's tweed. But, a case from 88 would fit that description too, and not be Fullerton.
You need to see the bass first hand. Is the decal over the laquer, or under it. That will make a quick AVRI vs. MIJ/CIJ determination.
As for Fullerton, I think I could tell just by looking at the body contours (they are far deeper on fullertons), but you might not be able too. Does the pickup have the raised A poles? Can't tell from the pics due tothe covers. FWIW - I think only the AVRI had the covers (of course, you can buy them aftermarket).
You need to see the date codes on the pots.
You should pull the neck and look for a pencil date.
Ugh - just not enough to go on with this one. I will say, based on the little evidence the pics provide, I lean towards, yes fullerton, as the bottom pic "seems" to indicate a fairly deep belly cut. But - dont take my word for it.

I really want to see it first hand my only problems are he lives 75 miles away and knows like nothing about basses. Its not really the drive but the fact i have no car, so i have to find a friend and give him gas.
the guy is asking a small enough sum that its worth it even if its just a AV RI and not a fullerton i just dont want to od the drive for a knock off or some MIJ bass because the price hes is asking is to high for MIJ.
However the wear looks nitro to me.
I am requesting more pics if this turns out to be a fullerton or even an AV RI this is something i would keep my whole life and at 20 years old that should be awhile.
Caution flag on the CAR P Bass;

I agree with that.
I always wonder about guys with gear like that that "don't know anything".....
It's always a bit of a red flag for me, but, could be a pawn shop or what have you.

Here are more pictures , let me know what you think. The guy wants 700$ and if this is MIA AV RI not 82-84 fender i know its worth more then he is asking and would still buy it, i just want to make sure its no MIJ

Funny, I was looking at the pics, and comparing them to the pics of the LPB one on the same page, and couldn't figure out what was bugging me.......
But I see it now. I'm not a P guy, so I wouldn't spot that straight away, but I could tell something was different, just couldn't figure it out. I actually thought it was the position of the string retainer. But, it's the decal in relation to the retainer.

Oh i know it amazes me , the decal really is off on it. Maybe a RI but probably not worth the gamble on it.

V02 is well into FMIC territory. It's probably an '88.
It is a nice bass though, and if the price is in line it would make a great player.
