Agreed, Joe. Having a good resale value IS a good thing, but on my list of reasons why I would buy a particular instrument, resale value isn't even a consideration.

Again I don't get it - what's with the 'resale' thing? If that's the reason for buying one bass over another then something's wrong.

I buy a bass because I want to own it - not parlay it into money later on.

That's a perfectly valid viewpoint, except the OP is not sure if he will like Precision Basses or not. If he decides he does NOT like it, then resale comes into play in how much of a financial bath he takes in disposing of it for something else. And, all things considered, it is a bit more likely he will like the Fender MIM than the Squier (I own both, I prefer my Fender MIMs over my Squiers).

I've been playing P basses for few years now and have also taken up double bass. I have an old Ibby SR400 I defretted a few years ago. Dusted it off for a jam the other night.

MAN did I find that neck skinny! Like a toothpick. I actually found it difficult to play...

Seems it's easier moving up in neck size rather than down...

I have a MIM P-bass that is very nice if I were just starting to play it would be the first bass I bought and $ 250 is a good deal.

Thanks for all of the comments. I certainly don't need another bass but I was just looking for a second to get different sound and to have one I can use to practice tuned to D standard. The Fact that the Fender has better resale might tip me that way. Thanks everyone!

Coupla points: D Standard wins. I even tune my guitar in D Standard.
Also, some cats might not be concerned with resale value, but I applaud you for considering it. I always do - I wish I could afford to not worry about it, but you never know what the future holds, y'know?

As for the sound, if you have an Ibanez that you're happy with I'd say go P over J, as the J will likely be closer sonically to your Ibanez than the P will.

As for the neck - yeah, it will be an adjustment. I also used to play basses with miniscule necks, and when I first got my hands on a knockoff P, I could hardly play it. But it wasn't long before I got used to it, and it made me a much better player all-round. (P.S. - I didn't go back to the thin necks.)

So I did end up getting the Fender MIM P this evening. It mind as well be new from the condition it's in and I only paid $220 for it so the deal was really sweet. It's had a pro setup so it plays great and my worries about the thicker neck were for nothing. A good setup cures all. I think the horrible setups at all of the music shops are what was causing me to doubt not just the choice of a P or a J but any choice. I think the fact that my used Ibanez was already setup really well helped GC sell me that bass in the first place.

Try a Fender Jazz bass!! The neck is thinner, only 1 1/2 inches at the nut as compared to a P, which is 1 3/4 at the nut and fatter in general. The ultimate for me would be a P body w/ a J neck. Being familiar with your Ibanez, I feel this would be a better match than a P. Good luck!
