Fender J and Rics...

Funny that you would mention feeling at home. I love Ricks, but J's are thin in weird places, and the string spacing at the bridge feels like crossing a canyon to me, not to mention that the shape of the body feels wrong. Personal experience is a strange thing.

Exactly, it is, and it's great we have so many different models, shapes, sounds and options to choose from! Personally, I'm still trying to be comfortable with the Rick, but that difference in shape and ergonomics makes me approach the instrument and the bass lines in a totally different angle, and for me, it helps me to become a better musician.

Sound like you've never a properly set up Jazz. Mine plays beautifully - low action, not a hint of buzz until I want it and dig in, smooth action all the way up and down the neck, with everything from a big thumping sound to a snarly growl easily dialled in.

OTOH, I don't care for Rics either.

Oh - it's not the setup. It's the way they look, the way they sound, the way they are built, the way they feel. Other that that I have no issues.

Rics? I wish I hadn't sold mine when I did (back in the mid '90's but I needed some emergency cash at the time)...took to it like a duck to water. One of these days I WILL get another.

The more I think about it, the more it feels weirdly random to choose Jazz bass and Rickenbacker in this.

I mean if I had to choose two 4 string basses from any of the factory produced basses out there that are as far away from each other I would probably pick those two. Neither are super fashionable either. Not with the popularity of the mighty P bass. So why these particular underdogs of the bass world?

Edit... if I had done it sooner I would’ve just been told that I wasted my money.

Some people would've said that but I would disagree. If it's something you love and you have the money than why not invest in it. I would probably buy another vintage Fender Precision or maybe a 70's Alembic someday.

Underdogs? I'd hardly consider either of these underdogs.
