My method.
After I do a set up, string height, intonation neck relief and after all the jacks are in their boxes
And the clowns have all gone to bed. I'll press down on all the strings after the end of the neck, while holding them down, I adjust the pickup height up to where they touch the strings under that pressure from my hand.
Or none of that and I'll use a nickel on top of the pick up and adjust the strings to touch the nickel.
