Fender Jazz 5 string replacement pickups - hot and punchy?

I just spent the last few hours searching the forums and web for replacement pickups for my MIM Jazz V.
Found all of the standards....nordy, seymour, Rio Grande, etc.....

The stock MIM pickups are weak.

Not sure which to pick?

My main gigging bass is a USA Peavey Foundation 5...which has super hot single coils. They almost sound like P bass pickups.

Are there any drop in replacements that do the hot, punchy and fat?
I'd prefer that the output is somewhat close to the Foundation.....so I don't have to tweak settings too much.

PS: I have the 101mm and 104/105mm pickup set.

Tons of people here with more insight than me, but I've been happy with both sets of Lindy Fralin Jazz Pickups I've had. Immediate improvement in sound over the stock pickups in a MIM instrument.

A lot of the info here applies to 4 string basses.
The Dimarzio offerings seem awesome....but they're not drop ins.



Are the Lindys a vintage type pickup?

I also heard some talk about just upgrading to an Audere preamp?

Will the Audere preamp respond the same with effects and the amp?

I've noticed that passive instruments react slightly differently with pedals and amps.

Can you describe the tone?

I have the impression that Barts are smooth and fat?

I'm after something a little brighter and slammin'.

Quater Pounders are supposed to be punchier than the stock ones and a direct drop in.

Iv'e recently put Fralin's in my USA jazz bass 5 and the clarity and punch is fantastic,and,the B is much tighter and focused,the tone is pure vintage,i love it!!

Well go for a overwound pickup,but if you want a jazz bass vintage tone then the Fralin's are the best IMO,good hunting,and $ spending too!

I've really only heard the pickups in a MIA Jazz V, MIM Jazz V, some barts in an active J and an active KSD605.

I haven't enjoyed the stock pickups in either Fender and the other two were active....so :idk:

I was very happy with Duncan 67-70 pickups. They have more of a vintage, mid-range tone to them at the same time as having a very wide presence.
I think I might have some sound samples of these...

The Quarter Pounders have more of a scooped tome to them, fat bottom and clear highs. These may be the way you want to go.

Hmm......punchy mid-range with solid low end and fairly immediate high end response is what I'm looking for.....

Something tight, and aggressive.

Mid scooped really isn't my thing.

No because I had a RV5 and it wasn't even close to a vintage tone because of the Sadowsky i.e./ Dimarzio humcancelling pickups which was to modern for my taste, but with that being said I think this is the type of tone that the OP would proably like.

I am looking for a set of pickups to make my 2014 American Jazz V (5 string) sound closer to a Precision. I know it will never be the same, and that is fine. I am now running Chromes on my Jazz and like what they did. The TI Flats that I run on my Precision just didn't cut it on my Jazz V. The B string sounded like it was a totally different instrument than the other four strings.

There seem to be a lot of replacement Jazz V pickups being made, but I'd like to find some that people are putting in and keeping. Too many are tried and sold. Like the Aguilar 5J-Hot. It seems like people try those and can't wait to pull them back out.
