Fender Jazz Bass Special - Circa 1984-87

Not sure how thick all the coats are, but it looks like there's a very thin color coat over another coat that looks like wood. The color coat seems to go, at least on mine, just around the edges. Very strange.

Mine has really thick coat of paint and a very thin layer of lacquer. I got a lot of clear white spots on the edges, there where the aged lacquer has chipped off but the paint is still there. So in my experience, crap lacquer, good paint.

i have a black and a red. finish seems thick on the red. not on the black.

For the first time I soloed both the bassless backing track and my bass,
so you can hear how the backing track sounds like with the original bassline removed,
and for the amazing growl of the 800RB and the Jazz Bass Special soloed.
The original bass is completely removed from the song so what you hear is only my bass.

E series was 1984-87, the "6" does not indicate 1986 although it's possible that is the year. You have a complete Torino red JBS that's in very nice condition. Fender Japan has reissued this bass which is generally good news for original owners since you can begin at full retail and show a vintage instrument that is demonstrably superior in almost every respect.

It's most likely a '87. From 84 to about 86 they had black finished necks with P nuth width. There was a transition period around 86 with black neck and J nut width and in 87 (the last year of the E series what lasted from 84 to 87) they came with J nut width and natural neck.

But like you said, the serial doesn't indicate the year.

While that might be the case in Canada or the UK, it certainly seems not to be in the US. I've had one listed here on TB, on Reverb and eBay for months, currently down to $799 with no serious interest. I believe the new ones are either $1099 or $1199. Now mine is less than pristine cosmetically, but I agree with your assessment hat it's demonstrably superior in every other respect.

I have an "E" series one with the j nut width and black neck. The finish on mine seems rare, I haven't seen any other Boxers in Burgundy Mist....no less fretless!

I could be wrong, but I think color and if it's fretted, is a huge factor of salability.
