Fender Jazz Bass?

If you aren't sure get a PBass Deluxe. has P and J pickups and tons of tone options between the pickup blend, tone controls and an active preamp switch. Very versatile bass IMO

The Jazz bass is a great choice. RHCP and Opeth both use them. I also did, in a thrash metal band, until I got bit by the P bug.

One of my favorite local metal bands uses a jazz bass so yes.

Considering that he's basically inaudible on most Dream Theater records, I don't think emulating his configuration is necessarily desirable.

Agreed, when I started getting into DT, I wondered if the band even HAD a bassist.

He's very good, its not like they have something to hide...
