They are actually really good, and some of them are suberb! Pickup making is not rocket science, and Fender can -- and does -- do it just as good as anybody else.

They are actually really good, and some of them are suberb! Pickup making is not rocket science, and Fender can -- and does -- do it just as good as anybody else.
I totally heard the difference. The basic tone was similar, but the Duncans have more character. Absolutely. It's a credit to Fender that your stock pickups sound as good as they do.
Yup, gotta agree that fender stock pups are really good. I wouldnt have changed them out if Im not looking for a heavier tone.
Swap them out for quarterpounders, and after a few months Im thinking of getting those stock pups back in.

Definitely hear the midrange voice of the instrument more clearly with the Duncans. Not a huge difference, but a nice amount of added character/clarity.
I have the exact same bass but different finish. I use Dimarzio DP123 Jazz set and the tone change complete. The tone is must beefy, warm and full of low ends.
I was playing a few days ago in a small club and there were three bassplayers in the audience. After the show they came to meet me and asked how the hell did I get that extraordinary great sound out of my jazz bass. I was a bit surprised that they heard the difference. But then I thought - I always look for the small improvements in my sound and that's the result:
A bad player + a good jazz bass + custom shop pickups + (Sadowsky preamp - that day I played all passive) + expensive cables + great amp (Epifani) + great cabinet (Epifani 4x10") + great PA System (KV2) + great soundman = great sound.
If you take anything out from that chain you'll loose the effect.
In my opinion the Seymour Duncans sounded much better. It depends on the band/situation/playing style etc. whether you can win from that 100USD sound wise or not.
