Fender JP 90 club?

Geroi'
There are more of us out there. Remember Fender only made these for 3 years. Weren't that many of them made. I have seen some of these parted out, and more than a few have neck problems, but look at how we have made out . We bought USA made Fender basses with Fender usa everything from 1990 for next to nothing. We should actualy be saving up and buying more of these. Who knows, someday the collectors might start buying them up.

I hope a few more people join in the fun....I know they're not the easiest to find, but considering they're fairly recent, they should pop up every now and then....

I'd like to (once I have the money) see if Fender Custom shop would be willing to make some JP90s....I have a plan...

Think of these...I'm working on the photoshops now....

White body and headstock, maple board with blocks, and a black binding around everything....

Black body & stock, with unlined fretless ebony board & white guard, all cream bound

I would love to see both of those built eventually.

I have to kind of laugh when I hear or see the Fender JP90 mentioned. Not about the instrument itself but, I saw it listed on Ebay once long ago and someone who obviously had no clue about this bass claimed it was the "Jaco Pastorius" model hence the "JP" model name. I about fell out of my chair that day in laughter. Asking price was like $1200 or something. I tell ya, some people...wow.

glad to see a new thread on JP90s. I've had mine since new. When I purchased it, I was told that they are/were made at Fender's Corona, CA facility.

Fretted,
They were made in California. Some people that don't like the JP90 insist the bodies were cut in Mexico and assembled in the us, but the people at Fender tell us they were MADE IN THE USA.Love mine, the tone sits in the mix very well. It is my only Fender USA bass and I don't plan on getting another. This one is enough. I also have an extremely modified Squier jazz bass. This gives me all the Fender tones I could ever need. Bodies made of poplar, maple necks, rosewood fretboards, with standard p and j fender pickups and wiring, Schaller tunners ,light as a feather, heavy in tone, what more could anyone want?

Have one, love it. I am going to gig it this weekend. My bandmates think it's ugly but I think it's funky kewl. I have a P and a J and they look like everyone else's. The JP looks like nothing anybody has seen. It Plays like a dream and is feather light. I am tempted to start a collection. I replaced the PG with an aftermarket .090" beveled one and it solves most objections I've read about. IMHO anyone who thinks they are too cool to play one just keep thinking that.

Peace

Well summer is here and my band is taking a little time off, for other interests and stuff, so I' m tearing my JP90 apart and sending the body out to get a custom airbrushed paint job. The artist is a perfectionist and after hearing what I want done is only charging me for materials. I am looking forward to getting it back already.

Keep us updated....sounds interesting.

For those in Southern California, TrueTone in Santa Monica has a white JP90 begging to be bought.

Anyone had any luck changing pick guards? The half pick guard just isnt doing it for me anymore. So, I've been researching getting a Jazz bass or P bass guard and retrofitting so it works. Only problem is that the current guard covers the bridge pickup as well. Anyone have any ideas or pointers?

About the only way to replace the pick guard on this would be a custom design by you made by someone like Pickguardian. The great thing about these basses are they don't look like a traditional Fender but they are. You may have just been around the traditionalists on TB too long. Nonconformity is sometimes a good thing also, IMHO. I had a custom rosewood guard made for mine but the same shape. A gentleman on eBay did mine

By the way ,the custom guard that I had made cost about 35 bucks and was rosewood. The guy did a great job.if you contact Bill he can make it out of any wood that you desire or maybe even plastic for the more traditional approach , good luck with your project.
