Here's my recently acquired '94 NOS P-bass. No pictures of my 2000 Midnight Wine 5 string jazz. Oh well...
?... Are MIM Owners as Hardcore as MIA Owners, or do we tend to waiver more and try other brands more than The MIA guys and gals?

The fretless on the right is a 2006 MIM in Midnight Wine with Dimarzio J's, black Gotoh bridge, and black pickguard. The MIA next to it has a much better nut and the tuners have a smoother feel, but IMO they both record equally well and are about on par in terms of playability after the mods on the MIM.

I thought the stock pickups were acceptable but didn't really stand out somehow. I recorded one song with the stock pickups and found myself using drastic amounts of EQ to give the sound more "personality." It sounds good in the mix on that track, but I did have to work at it a bit.
I'd definitely agree with others' observations that the Dimarzios sound meatier and have a pretty focused, solid bottom end. Another difference is that I never would have used the stock neck pickup solo (pretty indistinct sounding), but the Dimarzio neck pickup provides a very usable, almost "fretless P-bass" kind of tone when soloed. I'm using TI Jazz Flats now, so that has to be factored in as part of my MIM's overall sound too.
The Dimarzio J/TI flats combination is warm and dark - not everyone's cup of tea, I'm sure, but I like it. Scoop out some low mids around 300Hz to tighten it up and boost 1KHz so it cuts through a bit more and it seats itself in a mix very nicely.

My only complaint is that it's a tad muddy in a band sitch (gonna throw some groundwounds on) and the guy who installed my nut did it a little high (thoughts on how to fix this?)

Two incarnations of the same MIM Fender P-Bass.
Originally it had a crappy sunburst finish with an ugly white pickguard (which got replaced with a tort one). The first refinish revealed wood grain and gluing that was not to my liking, so I redid it to cover it up.

Here is my Mexican mule. 2002 Fender MIM, Standard, SD Basslines "Hot" pups wired series/parallel.
OK then, nothing special, my first bass: 2000/2001 Jazz in Midnight Wine. Completely stock, but nice nonetheless:

Nice DougP... looks familiar.
Nice bass ^ man... throw some aftermarket pups in there... you wont be sorry. Even if you just get some "vintage" wound pups. The SD "Hot" pups I put in mine make the thing a monster without losing the stock sound.
