Fender MIM road worn 60' J bass

They did. Check out the Gibson Q&A site regarding nitro finishes. They do more nitro finishes than many other guitar/bass companies. One factor may be the climate that the instrument was stored/shipped in has some effect. I owned a couple of Gibson's with nitro finishes. The neck on my LP was sticky (buffed it out in 15 minutes). The finish on my SG was not sticky at all. I posted pics of both on Talkbass if you care to look. ;)

Of the two RW Strats I also tried one was sticky and the other was just a little grabby on the body and the neck was ok, so I suspect it may be a consistency or QC issue.

It's absurd to think that the customer would be expected to buff out a finish. It's beyond the capabilities of the vast majority of perspective customers. I'd think that for what they're charging for the finish it would include a finished finish.

Sorry, but I think most people are capable of a little hand buffing with a lint-free cloth. It's not a QC issue, from what I've read, but simply a normal nature of nitro finishes in general.

My LP cost more than two Fender Road Worn basses. With import duties and taxes, the person who bought it from me paid the equivalent of 4 Road Worn basses for it. Nitro finishes require buffing from time to time to counter envirnmental factors and is normal maintenance.

Maybe on the back of the neck but that would leave the rest of the instrument still sticky.

Most customers can't setup their own instruments, but they don't have to because there's people like me they can pay to do setups and the like for them. It's absolute nonsense to expect them to take an instrument apart and reassemble it, which is what you'd have to do to properly buff the body.

I remember seeing a photo of the old Fender factory with several women buffing out the finishes on bodies. That's not something the average customer is interested in doing.

The average nitro finishes that I was familiar with in the past were never as sticky as these unless there was something wrong with them and they may have required refinishing if they were too gummy.

I am curious about this, but isn't there some sort of clear coat over the Road Worn nitro?

In any case, I looked on the Gibson site, but couldn't find Q&A. FAQ, yes, Q&A, no.

Also, any good ideas for search strings for that finish thread of yours where you posted pics?

I am hopeful that some who have posted here who own RW basses can chime in about their experience with the finish. :hyper:

Hi Jim,

Gibson changed their wesite design. I logged into the Gibson forum and asked for help locating the Nitrocellose finish FAQs or Q&A section. They may have it stuck in their forum somewhere. Again, they completely revamped the Gibson Forum as well. As soon as I get word, I'll post the update.

Might be a cheapish way to get into a nitro-finish relic Jazz bass if you've got some hardware laying around...

I don't have any spares, so I just did some quick calculations... If I hot-rodded the body by including Fralin pickups, an Audere preamp, a Badass bridge, neck plate, pickguard, freight etc I could still assemble the body of the bass for AU$1,300.00 (US$850.00), which is AU$1,100.00 cheaper than the best price I've been quoted on a MIM RoadWorn Jazz bass... I'm certain I could pick up a genuine neck with machine heads for less than that.

Those part-out guys are well connected! I just stopped by the local GC to see what I could see.

Two cloneworn strats, two cloneworn teles, and zero cloneworn basses of any kind.

When asked, the bass guy said, "Yeah, don't have any scheduled for arrival, wish I did, especially a fiesta red. All they ever send us are 2tsb P-basses, and I'm sick of those. When will they send something Oly?"

I asked, "Do you HAVE a road worn P now?" He said, "nope." I left. :scowl:

STRATosphere is the biggest hack shop on ebay. They constantly misrepresent stuff and I am just not a fan of the practice of parting out new stuff.

Anyway the stickiness on some instruments is not a QC thing. It is the nature of nitro. It is not always consistent and temperature can really effect it. While the are purists that rave about it my guess is the standard consumer base is much happier with poly.

I don't know what kind of Nitro Gibson or Fender uses but I spray Nitro all day long. It's never sticky after it flashes off and can be sanded in 20 minutes. The only Lacquer that I've ever sprayed that became Sticky was acrylic auto lacquer that I sprayed back in the 70s. The hwy 1 Fender finishes are just Gloss lacquer with flattening agent added and will buff to a nice shine. The road worn strats and teles Ive seen look to be steel wooled to a flat finish that looks like it would also buff to a nice shine. But I guess that would defeat the purpose.

If players like the look and don't mind the price I say"enjoy".
I'm going to wait until these things start hitting the pawn shops for $200.:)

I've bought 7 Mexi Fenders in the last year all for under $150.00 including a mint 2006 Jazz bass in ice blue, mint condition.
