Then I guess the question is, why didn't Fender just buff it? The body of my HWY1 P (also a flat finish nitro) wasn't sticky. I wonder if the relic finish would shine up just like the HWY1 does when buffed?
They did. Check out the Gibson Q&A site regarding nitro finishes. They do more nitro finishes than many other guitar/bass companies. One factor may be the climate that the instrument was stored/shipped in has some effect. I owned a couple of Gibson's with nitro finishes. The neck on my LP was sticky (buffed it out in 15 minutes). The finish on my SG was not sticky at all. I posted pics of both on Talkbass if you care to look.
