Fender MIM road worn 60' J bass

Just bought a RW 60's Jazz today in 3 tone sunburst. HOLY CRAP is this ever a great bass! Got it from GC and yes, paid less than $1200.00. This thing feels great to play and even though they may all be relic'd using a template its still a great job.

Now, this was the best playing jazz in the whole "Bass Room", now I know this is not saying much being its GC but it played AWSOME. The neck felt great with the finish worn off the back.

The Tone was off the charts. I had all the passive Fender J Basses off the wall in a line comparing them, Americans, mexicans...etc, etc. I had 4 employees, MGR and about 7 customers watching me playing through a AMPEG SVT classic head and 6x10 cab. THIS BASS WAS THE ABSOLUTE WINNER in everyones book, finger tone, bottom end, clarity, slaptone..you name it. Everyone agreed. For waht I paid, this was $$$ well spent. They really hit the mark with this one. Maybe a bit pricey but wow, the tone and cool factor was off the charts. Blew the other Jazz's away at any price point

Just a little 2cents on the 50's P relic...this was the bast P in the place...passive, active..you name it. It had a MONSTER low end. It killed all the P's at ANY price point.

I was up at Bass Emporium today and tried out a couple of the roadworns. I have one thing to say to those that think that they are not worth the cost:

You are f'ing crazy.

I was blown away by the workmanship and tone. If you were to grab one and compare it to the CS stuff side by side it would be hard to tell the difference and I did just that. I was playing one and raving about how great it was to the owner John and another customer got interested. He and I started a/bing the different ones with every other jazz in the shop and a Fiesta red roadworn was far and away the winner. Great feel, ridicules tone, and (I'd get a mint guard for it but otherwise...) it looked stunning. I was not real pleased when the other guy pulled out his credit card.

Really, I'm still freakin mad about loosing that one. I jokingly scolded the guy for stealing my bass (though I think he realized that I was partly serious). I learned my lesson. When one really speaks to you don't share it with anyone else just pull out the money. I can't wait to see if another one comes in that is that good.

Oh and BTW, I own ALOT of Fender Jazz basses (including MIA, MIM, CIJ, MIJ from the 70's, 80's, 90's and 2000's) and that bass was one of the best I have played. I could care a less where it was made if it plays and sounds like that.

For those of you that shop with your eyes and hate relics because you believe in things like "Mojo" in the Voodoo sense look elsewhere.

For those of you who shop with your hands and ears you really owe it to yourself to check these things out. I can easily see one in my future and probably would have had one today if I'd have kept my mouth shut.

One other Note. The guys at Bass Emporium said that Ed Friedland was really into that bass too. Kinda hard to discount that kind of endorsement.

So far it doesn't look like a myth.

But it doesn't really matter, the original finish is always just a starting point for whatever use/abuse is to follow through the life of the instrument.

They just look strange hanging next to each other in the shop when new or in shot after shot in "show me" threads.

I'm waiting for someone to buy one and refinish it to a "new" finish. :)

yeah for a roadworn i'd pay around $850 at most. i wish they didnt have to add expensive nice pick-ups and higher quality wood. its already worn so why make it with higher quality wood? i wish it was just a Fender Standard with the road worn look to it...

Great tone and feel = winner in my book. These are the qualities that make or break a bass regardless of anything else such as relic'ing. If it plays and sounds right to you, then all other considerations don't matter quite so much.
