I agree about the Mustang PJ being moved into the Player Series.
It seems Fender do not publish their sales figures for their different bass models, however the Mustang PJ is very popular.
Given its popularity, I do not get why Fender are not producing any maple fretboard Mustang PJ as a standard offer instead of doing only some special editions for CME, Sweetwater, etc.
The same goes for the color options, I suppose they might sell a lot of sunburst, black, or silver models.
Just look at how succesfull were the black and the silver short scale Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar SS basses. Much of their popularity was probably due to the short scale and its ease of play, but I think the looks of the Jag SS contributed to the success.
Getting back to the Mustang, considering today's different, unprejudiced approach to short scale basses (no longer seen as student models only) maybe it is time Fender will think about an American Professional Mustang with ONE PICKUP and lots of color options with both maple and rosewood fretboards.
Let's see what the 2020 Winter NAMM will bring.
IME, as a '65 or '66 Fender Duo-Sonic II guitar player in the '60s and a '71 Fender Mustang "Competition" bass in the '70s, the "offset" is nothing more than the body shape where the waist-points are at different elevations when it is standing vertical. My Duo-Sonic said "Offset Body Patented", or some such, right on the headstock. My friend had a MusicMaster guitar that said that too. I seem to recall a Fender catalog describing "the comfort of the offset waist body", which my friend and I just shrugged off. We was teenagers playing rock n' roll! Who cared about comfort?
And, when I wanted my first bass, I was very pleased to see an affordable used Mustang, since I had previously lusted after Mustang guitars! I have since read that the late '60s thru mid '70s Mustang basses have contoured bodies, meaning the "belly scarf" and right-arm slope. Well, I don't recall noticing if mine had that, since the Duo-Sonic's slab body had been no noticable discomfort, whatsoever!
Now, in my more "mature" years I really do appreciate such body contours, especially the right-arm slope! Currently loving almost everything about my semi-hollowbody Fender MP Starcaster Bass, except that sharp body edge my right arm sits on! So, I would appreciate finding a modern contoured Mustang bass!

2 words: matching headstock. Bonus points for going out on a bit of a limb and doing a proper competition Mustang (orange for me please). It is clear that the Mustang is your number 3 bass and 3rd or 4th guitar in sales...how about giving it the underdog colours it deserves?

Just got this guy. Plays and sounds nice. I’m going to put aguilars in, and I’m still up in the air about rounds (my regular) or flats to help reduce clank. Also, are there any other cheap options for a gig bag? That gator one looks awesome but it’s also a lot for a ~500 dollar bass.

I was debating between this, the green CME, and the Tidepool from Sweetwater. Ultimately, the PF boards just looked underwhelming in the website pictures and I’ve always wanted a sunburst bass.
If you want one of the CME basses, definitely avoid Amazon as a source (go straight to CME instead). Amazon provides no value add. They indicated that they were in stock and "Fulfilled by Amazon", usually meaning that they were ready to ship. After 5 days, Amazon still hasn't gotten my bass to the shipper (USPS) who is supposed to ship it "2 day" (but who knows at this point... last Amazon status has it on the other side of the country).
Just got my Mustang case delivered today. It's so nice. They shipped this super fast. Very happy I jumped on that deal.
Which one did you order? I actually ordered mine from Amazon because I figured it was just shipped from CME and I had amazon gift cards. It shipped from NJ, but the box was from CME and it looked like it was previously shipped to the NJ warehouse from Chicago just before the new year. I think (just an educated guess) that they ship a couple to the amazon warehouse to have ready to ship prime, and probably replenish when they run out. When I ordered, I think it said there were two in stock.
It was the LPB with maple board. Ordered last Thursday, shipping speed set to "2 day". It spent Thursday, Friday and Saturday being "prepared for shipment". Sunday said "shipping now" and by end of Sunday I had a USPS tracking number (but no acknowledgement from USPS they've ever seen it). Monday it showed up as being in the NJ Amazon warehouse, then left Monday night. No further tracking available. At this point, even though I have a USPS number and an acknowledgement from Amazon that I have "2 day" shipping, I'm assuming Amazon is trucking the thing cross country before handing it to USPS for local delivery.
If Amazon hadn't listed it as "In Stock" and "Fulfilled by Amazon", I wouldn't have been tempted down this circuitous path. CME would have had it to me quicker. It probably worked out better for you being nearer the NJ site.

Couch Guitar straps are top notch. I sold this one to a friend of mine but still have two other ones- one grey & one black w/ cat faces on it.
Agree if that is the “top” of the pickup. Is it possible that is the “bottom” plate that ends up in the cavity?
I'm considering some mods to my Mustang PJ. I like it a lot in terms of the neck and playability so am thinking rather than going for one of the more expensive Mustangs I might just class this one up a bit. It is my regular workhorse. Or work pony. I already have a Badass bridge on it and am wondering what y'all would recommend. I am thinking the J-pickup for one, and I'm not crazy about that three-way switch -- honestly I just play it in forward (P position I think) nearly all the time.
Any other ideas? I want to take it in for a setup and would have the shop do the work, so I don't want to go crazy. I replaced the bridge myself but still don't feel that it's intonated quite right (it came completely disassembled -- medium story) but I don't know that I want to mess around with replacing switches and pickups.
